Just do a search on Google/Yahoo/Etc. for the hotel name and you'll find plenty of good deals. I was able to beat planetholiday every single time. However, you should never take the star rating too seriously. I've booked 4-star hotels that were hard-pressed to meet my expectation of a 2-star experience. Use a guidebook or web review to determine what kind of service you can really expect.
Quote: from Al Kiholic on 4:39 pm on May 8, 2003 Dave... What is a good online site to book a 4 or 5 star hotel @ a decent rate? I have been going to planetholiday.com. How does that one rate for price? Most of my surfing of the net has given just about the same price for all hotels. Al

Good luck! When I tried to check-in one day early at The Emerald Hotel, they wanted to charge me something like 2.3K for a room that I had paid 1.5K for online. Thankfully they had no problem letting the subcontracting agency make the change for me at the original rate. I really would not like to be in your shoes even with SARS and whatnot. Though simple logic would dictate that rates should decline with higher vacancy levels, I sure wouldn't be counting on it. Don't forget to let us know what happens. I'll be curious to see if you can really beat the odds after all.

Al Recently I have been using http://www.resorthotel.net I usually book a couple of nights to start off. If I want to change or extend, I call the agent who then calls the hotel and I get the extension at the on-line rate, which has always been much less than the walk-in rate.

forgot to add a comment. Some time ago, a few of the regular visitors to LOS did some shopping around. We found that there isn't one on-line agency that is always the cheapest. It varies from hotel and agency so choose your hotel and shop

I have had good luck just walking in and also online. It is just a matter of timing. Last trip I showed up at 130am with no hotel reservation. My third try was the ambassador for 900 per night. But I have also called hotels and asked their rate, and then compared that to internet bookings. If the quoated rate is cheaper I go right to the hotel. If the internet rate is cheaper, I print the page and take it with me to the hotel. They will usualy honor price even though I didnt book it through the agency. Through this method I have more than saved the cost of buying a cell phone in LOS.

Yes, hotels are dealing. But they're not completely bending over. I'm at the GP June 5 - 9, Diamond Suite (2 king bedrooms, 75 square meters). Called them, asked for best rate w/TSM discount. They said 4000/night + 10%. I offered 3500 + 10%. They accepted. This is with no breakfast, but don't care. Heard it wasn't that great anyway. Don't know if they'd go lower, bet not too much. I think it's a pretty good deal. Have heard rooms are O.K. Location is super.
