lalake: Here's another article from The Nation about the Conrad Hotel being a target: SECURITY IN CAPITAL: 200 'soft spots' found Published on Sep 22, 2003 High-rise buildings among 23 at-risk sites identified in survey along the Chao Phya River Security agencies have identified more than 200 "soft spots" along routes world leaders will take during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, including high-rise buildings lining the Chao Phya River. The head of the Apec security taskforce, Assistant National Police chief Lt-General Krisna Polananta, said the taskforce had identified 23 soft spots in a river survey between Krung Thon and Sathorn bridges yesterday. This is the main waterway route leaders would use in case of an emergency. Security will focus on Navy headquarters where Apec leaders will have a dinner and watch the Royal Barge procession, as well as four hotels by the river that will host the leaders. Yesterday's river survey capped a series of land, aerial and waterway security surveys conducted over the past few weeks. Information gathered from these surveys would be used to set up comprehensive security checks and drills early next month, Deputy Metropolitan Police Bureau Commissioner Maj-General Adul Saengsingkaew said. Security in the capital has been markedly stepped up one month ahead of the summit, which will take place from October 19 to 21. US President George W Bush is among the world leaders scheduled to attend the summit. The New York Times reported on Saturday that Bangkok International Airport and the J W Marriott and Conrad hotels - two American-managed hotels among the 16 Bangkok that will host Apec delegates - were the targets for an attack plotted by terrorist suspect Hambali, who was captured in Ayutthaya last month. But Krisna said all soft spots would be secured as more police would be deployed to those areas during the Apec summit. He said that security measures for the summit would be more intense than those of previous international conferences hosted by the Kingdom. Officials need to adjust the plan over the coming weeks to ensure security arrangements concerning these areas will be foolproof, Adul said. The bureau's commissioner, Lt-General Dumrongsak Nilkuha, said that the police had already stepped up security at several places where either Thais or foreigners gathered across the capital, not only at the two hotels cited by the Times, but also at churches and mosques. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday urged the public not to worry about the terrorist threats highlighted by Hambali's plot as the government would focus on intelligence, which was key to safety and security during the Apec meetings. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/page.arcview.php3?clid=2

thanks to all for info on the articles. Of course I have been trying to follow all of the threats since I spend a lot of time at both the JW and the Conrad. And since I was scheduled to be at the JW during the APEC summit, I was alarmed when I read what China Sailor posted. I appreciate the heads-up. I have delayed my arrival in BKK until the 22nd, which should help a bit. Now, I'll go to Manila for a few days instead, which is a close 2nd to BKK. cheers,

lalake, Just been in Manila on Business, buzz is another coup in the offering. This was colaborated in Singapore's Today paper. Just keep your eyes open anywhere in SEA and you will be OK. PS: It is safe to stay in the Oakwood now. In the eternal sense of fair play that the Pinoy have, the same hotel is never occupied twice in a row.

Anyone tried the Conrad Residence? the serviced apartment section of the Conrad in All Season place?? Looks like not a great deal but still it does look awesome and might be useful to finish HHonors required points. Just mailed them to ask for a corporate rate and wonder what to expect.

I have stayed at JW,Conrad, and most recently Sheraton Grande. I thought that none of these properties were 5 star hotels. JW is my favorite and Sheraton was the most disappointing (the pool is cool though!)

Agreed, this is pretty serious stuff, and I'm curious myself what kind of music the CIA likes...
