I booked a room in the Shangri-La through Priceline and on check in, since had my wife and young daughter with me, if I would like to upgrade to a 2 bedroom suite, cost 19$. Not per night, for the three days I was there - Sure I would. And it wasn' that they had run out of rooms either as when I got to the suuite it was a twin bed one. Asked for a double bed one - not avaialble - but we can send you to the room you booked and refund your surcharge - or just push the beds together (which were almost the size of doubles) and make them up as a double.

How about if they don't offer, but you'd like to get an upgrade? Can you try to slip them a tip/bribe upon check-in or is that insulting to the Thais? I'm booked for a Superior at the Grand China Princess next week, but I'd love to finagle a Deluxe or even a suite. Any ideas/experiences?
