FWIW I have now booked Sukhumvvit 5* three times on Priceline, had JWM twice and Westin once.
Average bid 75 USD or £38 plus charges of about 20%.

Cube,

How was the Marriott room?

I read a story about a guy booking through price line being messed about, being asked if he wanted a sinlge or two twins as he had booked a double but no 'big' bed available!

First time was a few years back. I was given a rather large room. Pleasant, and nice bathroom. The other times and more recently have been given smaller rooms and I personally thought their age was definitely showing. Now I think the renovated rooms at the Westin (by Robinson) are better (renovation has now been complete for some time if not mistaken). However, you can totally avoid the walk of shame at the Marriot by going through the side entrance...whereas westin requires that you take one elevator to the reception floor, then complete the walk of shame to another elevator to get to your room!

Never had any twin/large bed issues with the marriot. The bookings I made through HK priceline were by default double occupancy and always got the kings size bed that I requested.

I find the whole walk of shame thing a little dramatic. Personally, unless I'm getting the charge of shame I really couldn't give a damn. Even at the JW those folks just kiss your ass so much it doesn't really matter what you do. Even the lowly pricelining whoremonger gets a nice kiss on the lower cheek and away you go.

All priceline bookings are implicitly for 2 people. You can request a single large bed when you check-in, but whether you get it will be depend on availability.

I assume it will still be an availability issue but when I bid on Priceline or Hotwire for a room I always call immediately and request a King bed, non smoking. I do this ahead of time rather than at check-in. Serves two purposes...confirms my reservation and gets my name on the list for a certain type of room. That way they may still have your room type when you get to the hotel and the poor guy before you got the small room with two cots.

LastSurvivor,

That's a real good suggestion. From now on, whenever I need a tip, I'll just 'ask the brain'.

One thing that sucks is that you can't seem to get Shang anymore and it was going for unbelievable $55 US last summer. I read in a few spots that many considered it the best deal worldwide on PL (condenast and others rate shang very high, like in top 20 hotels ww). You could join golden circle for free and pay $25 upgrade to exec level of shang also.

I always wanted to stay on the river for a few nights and do the cruise thing. Can't even safely downgrade to 4 stars on PL and try for Marriott, as most people have been getting holiday inn, which doesn't have very good reviews.

Da Judge,

Not only that, the Shang has increased it's suite upgrade to $65. I know, used to be $25 and I took advantage, got a suite for less than non-PL guests were paying for a regular room (their regular rooms are not all that great, IMHO, except in the Krungthep Wing)

$50 upgrade for Horizon Room, $120 for Horizon Suite. I've tried all 3, Horizon Suite gets you a silk sofa, but seems slightly smaller than regular suites.
'Horizon' gives you high floor, and free drinks and finger foods 5-7 PM, free internet access, free breakfast.

I don't think you have to be a guest to take the Horizon River Cruise. I recommend the all-day trip to Ayutthaya, rather than just the evening dinner cruise.

I hope the Shang comes back online, I've stayed there 6 times.

Thanks TA:

Would the same recommendation hold if I had a seven year old with me? How long is that day long cruise?

You take the bus up to Ayutthaya early in the morning, around 8 as I recall. View the ruins, and also the royal residence there, then return via boat. I believe the cruise from Ayutthaya takes about 4 hours, and brings you to the Shang just before 5 PM. The evening dinner cruise is about 100 minutes or so. The same great buffet is served at both.
