No issues with joiner fees at Manhattan in February. I had booked via internet with Asia-Travel and stated the occupancy was for two people. I paid the listed 'bargain' 980 Baht per night. No issue when checking in at hotel that there was just myself. The hotel room pass stated that occupancy was for two. Twelve TG passed through reception in nine days/nights and only the first two were asked to leave ID at the desk. I picked up a FL from Soi 7 the one night whom I was a bit unsure about so I pre-warned her the hotel would ask for her ID. She produced it as I went for the key and they took it without any comment.

I told the agent only 1 person/ double room. Maybe I should cancel and rebook for 2 people/ double to be on the safe side. Yeah, I think that is what I should do, I think maybe this would resolve the issue.

dagul, I would definitely book the room as a double. Whenever I bought a TG in they checked to make sure I had a double room. On another note there's a guy that works the nightshift that tried to get me to pay for bringing a girl to my room even though I'd booked a double. I think that he's a bellhop or security gaurd but the little asshole knocked on my door just as I was about to do the deed and had a slip he wanted me to sign. He claimed that I had to pay for the guest even though I'd booked a double, he even said something to the girl in Thai, which she said he was trying to harass her for money. After I got my point across to him that I wasn't paying the fee because that was the point of me booking a double he left but it left a bad taste in my mouth. All in all, I won't be returning to the Manhattan. The rooms were a bit worn and the pool is very small. One good thing was that the girls did like the view and it is farely close to Sukhumvit.

Just got the 2nd email asking for my credit card confirmation after they made the Double Room correction (see previous posts), but there was a sidenote below my reservation details that kind of irritated me. Here is what it read, (This is the only sentence that was capitalized in the email). PLS NOTE THAT IF THE SECOND GUEST IS THAI; THE EXTRA WILL BE CHARGED ON SPOT I guess the agent felt like she needed to include this information for me. Bye Bye ManhattanÖ now I'm looking for a different hotel (already too many hassles just trying to book this place) I'm sure the Manhattan is a nice hotel for the money spent, but I really don't feel like dealing with a staff who is going to check on my roomtype every time I come in w/ a girl or possible knock on my door and question me, like they did Aprod and his company. Hard construction starting at 8am doesn't help the situation either. I'm sure getting guests in for free is very possible, but I don't feel like lying or sneaking or hoping the right security guard is working. I just want to walk in and go to my room in peace, without having to deal with the desk, except for maybe handing over the girl's ID. It not the fee that I'm so worried about, it's the convenience and no hassle that I'm interested in. UPDATE - Just booked a room at the Nana. Although, probably a bit sleazier, better suited for my agenda... Good luck to all of you staying at the Manhattan...

Slightly off track but relevant to the last post. My firend has just booked the Somerset and he was aksed to "pay in advance" whcih seems to be what Dagul implied. Is this a new trend or am I being a bit dim here. I work abroad a lot and Ive never paid a hotel bill "in advance" - what the heck happens if you have a crisis and have to leave early or simply want to go to the islands for a few days to escape the smog Ive only used four different places in the last three years (President Park, PSolitaire, GPresident and Landmark) and categorically none of them has every asked me to pay anything in advance of my leaving date. Id be interested to know what other members experiences are and if I should brace myself for demands for advance fees in the future.

Whitespider, The Manhattan Hotel only asked for a $10 deposit, which is refundable if you cancel within 7 days. The website stated that you can check out early if you need to without penalty. I have booked 5 different hotels for my trip (I'm going all over Thailand) and most just required a credit card number and some a small deposit to guarantee the room (I was never asked to pay the full cost before arrival at any hotel). Koh Samui was a bit steeper with their deposit, about 25% of the total cost due to me being there during the high season. I would never stay at a hotel that required full payment before arrival, but I have never come across that. Leaving early without incurring a fee shouldn't be a problem as long as you give a few days notice. If you are visiting during the low season I think most hotels would be ok with you checking out the next day without penalty, as I have done that before at a 5 star hotel in Phuket. If you are visiting during the high season you might have a problem (I think 3 - 7 days advance notice is the norm).

Just stayed at the Manhattan Hotel. They are doing construction on both sides. The one facing Soi Cowboy is the new construction site. It isn't as loud as the other side, but it is annoying. They went till around midnight, except for Sunday. I booked a double through a travel service and I was never charged a joiners fee. In most cases, they never asked for ID, unless the tg offered to leave it at the front desk. The rooms are nice and buffet breakfast is very nice. For the price, its a good deal. Too much construction for me though.
