JS,

Do you mean 'priceline.com'? I checked them as well. They did not have Westin or Sheraton Sukh at the time. But even now they still have Royal Orchid at $150 per night which is not a fantastic rate at all.

KK:

Not having a go at you here, but I don't think you understand how priceline works.

Don't go to the hotels they have listed with prices - you must make a bid for an "unknown" hotel.

But if you bid for a 5 star on Sukhumvit, you will get either JW Marriott, Westin, or Sheraton (unless PL has added more 5 stars fo this zone, which I don't think they have). People are currently having bids accepted of $80-95 for these hotels.

Give it a try.

Yeah JS. If KK had looked in the "priceline" thread he would have seen how it works.

You choose your city - Bangkok. Your area - Sukhumvit - 5 star properties ; choose your dates & bid $75 if memory serves me.

The guys said they mostly got JWM at this price point. & you are right all 3 will pop up from time to time.

You are right that the hotels are cloaked. you won't know which you are getting till one of them accepts your bid.

I found priceline to be quite expensive when I've tried to use them recently. Maybe the dates I wanted were particularly popular but for the end of October I had bids of up to $90 refused (the highest I'd ever had to pay before was around $75 mark that Dotcom mentions).

Ended up booking myself into the President Solitaire again, the location isn't as good as the 3 priceline alternatives but the rooms are a lot nicer and it worked out as cheaper too.

Just spent 7 days at Sheraton Sukh though I still think that the Hyatt Erawan where I stayed 3 years ago is a better hotel (superb rooms and lobby). Service, disco bar are of the same level. Hyatt rates are slightly higher and restaurants are slightly worse I think.
But I was interested in a pool area mostly and Sheraton have the marvellous one. The local TV guys even brought Steven Seagull (not sure if pronounced correctly the name of this actor) for an interview near this pool on Friday. Initially I planned to go to Hua-Hin for 4 nights in the middle of total of 8 nights trip. But unfortunately it was heavily raining in Hua-Hin (worse than in Bkk) and I decided to not waste my 'precious first-in-this-year' vacation time and to go back to Bkk next day. Sheraton Sukh have almost replaced Hyatt Hua-Hin. 'Almost' is because of the absence of the ocean coast.
Massage was somewhat like Thai massage I can have in my country. But my special thanks go to Fat Forty Six who advised King&I next door. I have not been to any other massage parlours but this one is much better than Sukh. And I am not only talking about the price which is twice cheaper than in Sher, but also massage quality and pretty girls (if it matters in legit massage).
Another advantage of Sher for me was walking distance to Cabbages&Condoms and to Soi Cowboy. But Hyatt is better for one who is there for expensive shopping at Gaysorn or Erawan which are next door. I will share shopping information on the relevant thread.
The best-looking girls in Rivas asked for 5000 Baht for short time. In general I think the quality is the same as in Long Gun (I was in each place like 4-5 times last week) but these girls speak better English, know how to behave with foreigners and wear nice clothes. Very good if somebody does not care of $50-70 difference and/or wants to entertain his important guest or similar. But I can personally pay this price for the same or even better level in my country. Actually to my surprise I have noticed that the prices went up since 2002.
There were a couple of Russian girls almost each time if somebody is interested. I could see them there when passing by from the entrance to the elevators. When I was inside they were either busy or absent and therefore could not check their rates.
I went to Westin across the street as well for scouting for the potential lodging next time. Spent only 10 minutes there and thus can not say too much. I liked it as the walk-in rate was $50 less than Sher and $70 better than Hyatt. But I did not really understand that elevators issue:do you really have to change the elevators at the 7th (reception) floor each time you go to your room?

KK good hotel TR
Yes at Westin you need to change elevators.
The Peninsula is a great hotel a bit out of the way for serious mongers but OK if you have a nice TG for a couple of days.
Check out their River Retreat package, includes S Class Merc transfer, free skytrain, afternoon tea etc.

KK:

Thanks for the wrap. Am returning to BKK for 8 days in Dec-Jan and looking forward to getting back to the King&I.

BTW; the Starwood hotels are looking very expensive over Dec-Jan. On the Starwood Preferred Guest site SHG is $US170, Westin $US180 and even the Royal Orchid is $US200.

Just as well I'm burning points this visit.

Can anyone tell me how far the Westin is from JW Marriott? Is it walkable? If not, how far on the skytrain? Anyone stay at the Westin recently?

Buttman:

It's a 10 minute walk and on the other side of Suk. One stop on the skytrain but I'd walk unless raining.
