Way to go CJ (who I know), you do have a way with words a you do know more about the Islamic.
1/10 of what CJ knows about the Islamic situation is more than most will know in their life. I too have spent time there.
REALITY CHECK
I used to love hanging out in Soi 3 and got some great beauties at the Grace in the 90's, but it is a completely different time. I love the food, the music, and the casbah atmosphere too.
But it is a different time. It was only about 6 years ago, when a fine alert Thai Metro flatfoot doing his beat on Wirelss noticed a strange truck outside of the Israeli Embassy. It was two Malay (I think) Muslims with a truck full of you know what. I think the US Embassy is across the street too.
The CIA and Mossad do not hang around Soi 3 for their health (maybe the food perhaps), conversation, or coffee (Seattle, LA, and Tel Aviv have coffee shops,esp, Denny's).
When the clock stops ticking and 11th Hour approaches for Saddam to be turned into an oil well, who knows what will happen.
There are at least 200 million moslems out there that are of the fundamentalist nature and many of the rest are lemmings. I have a number of Muwlim friends here in America (some who have been to LOS) and they have told me two things
1)The majority of Muslims do abhor what Islamicists are doing but never in a 1000 year will they speak out against it or condemn it out of fear from their fellow mosquevites(this is in America!!! Imagine what its like in their shitholes)
2)Do not hand around places with alot of Muslims (part Arabs), esp if you are American, British, or Jewish.
These guys are always straight with me.
So beware and stick to the many many many many great venues in BKK and there are plenty of good Hindu and Sikh resturants all over BKK (Mrs. Balbirs, Prasads, Putumwan). One more insight from my Pakistani-American friends. They can't stand Arabs and the Afghans hate them even more. But they are told who to publicly hate and publicly support in the own communities and country. Go to LA and you will find and unbelievable amount of Pakistanis and Jews who do business together.
I got off topic, but we all need to be careful in these troubled times.

I can say that 10 years back, Grace Hotel was indeed was mostly occupied by Arabs, but now the situation have changed. There are still some Arabs but now days you also will see Iranians and Turkish, and very few Indians and Pakis, I am sure you average amelican cannot distinguish between them..hey Bruno do you remeber those Pakis who beaten in LA by some amercian thugs just beacuse they thought they were Arabs, ha ha ha that says something...But honestly, the Arabs punters in Thailand are only there to ram some pussies and have fun and do not give a damn shit about who is coming or leaving the Grace Hotel.

Admittedly, we Americans do have some difficulty distinguishing peoples' origins. Maybe we just don't care, I like to think that we put an emphasis on individual merit. Truthfully though, we are equal opportunity discriminators, and while I certainly don't condone the wholesale bashing of Arab or Islamic appearing peoples, I tend to be more careful. Who knows, that offensive, french speaking, arab looking bloke next to me at the bar might just be an American

Many Americans do not know the difference between Bagdad or Bengladesh and most don't care. If you are in America, follow the laws, pay taxes, MYOB, nobody cares. Unlike Europe we don't have front running Xenophobic politicos and we don't synagogues being burned and trashed either.

It is between Majestic (where I stayed before but no pool; I need to chill during the day), Manhattan (not as close to NEP or Grace coffee shop as I would lke), or Grace Hotel.
Not seen many threads here recently re whether the rooms at Grace are clean. Will I have bed buddies? Also, someone wrote here about middle easterns who stay there not liking Americans (hey, I am just going there for fun, not to propangandize).
I love the atmosphere of the Grace Coffee shop.
People have mentioned the Grand President, but a bit down the path for me.
Help, dear brothers.

grumbly, try Bel Aire Princess (make sure you book a double occupancy room, to avoid the joiner fee when bringing in a guest) on Sukhumvit Soi 5, just around the corner from Grace Hotel.
There is Zenith Hotel (Sukhumvit Soi 3), but I hear that it is not guest friendly.
A little further away is Park Hotel on Soi 7, which is just opposite Beer Garden.

I am American and Jewish and have stayed at The Grace at least a dozen times since the the 9/11.Nobody has given me the slightest hassle,I enjoy the exotic non thai or european atmosphere.Most of the rooms have been completely refurbished and not gone to seed like those at the Nana.After a night of drinking and whoring I do not have to try to get my moneys worth socking down the greasy buffet(ala Nana) and it's a short walk to foodland,and when returning from the first days back from America while my biological clock is running amock I can wake up and fulfil my horniness at any hour.I will never forget a thai-African women I met on the elavater at 6:30 pm.It is also the last place the people my countrymen fear would plant an infernal device unlike the Nana or NEP which might be the first.I see many farang couples,many with children in the lobby.
