Good that you were able to stay in the Krungthep wing - I've stayed at the Shang many times in the past and I've never scored an upgrade there (what was your magic word? Or was it <wink> the $20 note?)

The Shang boasts very good deluxe rooms (to die for) but their basic rooms (superior) are not a 5-star product because they are smallish and lack a separate shower/bath. In contrast, the JW Marriott and the Conrad, while small, have a separate shower stall and superior turn-down service with lots of chocolates.  I don't recall getting any chocolates from the Shangri-la.

piston,

Was very suprised to be assigned to the Krungthep wing, 14th floor no less (out of 16). Occupancy seemed light, never many people around, almost like we had the place to ourselves.

No chocolates provided, but daily fruit basket was even better. Never made it to breakfast by 10:30, so fruit was a nice breakfast substitute, supplemented with some spicy Thai pussy.

Enjoyed a fine cigar on the balcony daily, while reading BKK Post and USA Today. Only problem was a voyuer in the room. When my TG was on top, grinding my tool, looked up to see a small gekko standing on the ceiling, peering down at us. Was able to chase the little guy under the door, and out of the room later. LOL

Lovely Playskool sweetie made coffee, peeled the fruit, de-seeded the grapes, and fed me while I sat on the couch watching Monday Night Football!!! Where else can you find women like this? I feel like a fool for only booking 3 nights. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't get any better than 'shagging at the Shang.'

Passed on the helicopter transfer to the airport.

the best girl friendly 5* hotels in town are still at the moment:
the Conrad (rates start as low as usd 75 for rooms and about usd 95 for juniors), as stressed before convinient location to nana and siam, patpong.
my all time favourite the Sukhothai on sathorn. rooms start at around usd 140, but for a mere usd 35 more one gets an executive room, with a bathroom the size of a normal luxury rooms (very nice screwing in there as it has mirrors all around and a couple of benches and restplaces), a guest toilette, private fax, bluetooth internet excess etc.
a good choice is also the banyan tree, an all suites only hotel just beside the sukhothai. rooms start at about usd 75 (all above mentioned rates ++, of course without breakfast) and are located between the 28th and 56th floor soyou will have one of the most breath taking views over the bangkok skyline.

Its worth mentioning that the Sukothai has a good package on suites at the moment with guaranteed upgrade to exec suite and a few other benefits (limo transfer, breakfast etc) for approx $200 a night. regent has a similar deal going too.

Have never seen the Conrad as low as $75, lowest I have ever had was $89 with an extra $40 approx for a suite upgrade, where do you find the lower rates? My latest booking at the Conrad varies in price between $135 and $99 (depending on days) for a reg room, plus whatever I have to pay when I arrive to score a decent room upgrade. I didnt know they had jnr suites there, anyone know what these are like? Have never seen low suite rates for pre-reservation at the Conrad either, but usually it is possible to upgrade for less than half of rack as a high tier HH member.

I have seen that Expedia has a slightly lower rate on the Conrad, but this has to be pre paid and probably doesnt give normal HH VIP benefits.

A minor point for some, but bloody irritating for me is that I have found the mobile phone reception piss poor on the higher floors of the Conrad, irrespective of network. Noone has ever been able to explain this satisfactorily on my previous stays.

BUCKS......... I booked a $75 rate at the Conrad through the Hilton web site. But it is a AAA rate, so you have to enter that while making your selections where it says "rate plans" or it does not show up. Also, they DID ask to see my AAA card at check-in.

Cheers for the tip re: AAA rate, but as a Brit have never found the need for AAA membership, that said, might actually achieve rapid payback at 25$++ per night.
