I will be in BKK for 3 weeks from December 20 to January 10 this year. After reading some of the threads in this forum I decided to book a room in Landmark. I have a few questions:

1. I got this rate for a Superior double room on the regular floor from their online reservation:

USD 100.-plus 10%service &7%vat. with breakfast per room

I wonder if I can book this hotel for a cheaper price somewhere else or this is pretty much standard price for December-January.

2. Should I book now or I still have time to look around for some other places? How fast these places get fullbooked? Do the prices get higher if I wait until say October to book?

3. They offer transportation from the airport for 1200 BHT. Is it worth it or maybe I can get a taxi from the airport for half this price.

I'd appreciate any help or advice anyone might be able to provide.

Cheers,

#3 I would just take a taxi from the outside stand of the airport; simple taxi but much cheaper.

I hear the LM is a nice choice. Good pick

Mr Alan
Taxi from airport to Landmark is less than 300 baht (including tolls and tip). Before you get to the taxis at the airport, someone will try to get you into a limo for about 600 baht. 1200 baht is ridiculous, especially since you have to worry about meeting up with a driver in arrivals.

$100 sounds very high for that hotel, but not sure about bookings in Dec and Jan. You might try Priceline and bid on 5 star hotel in Sukhumvit area, but you might get JW Marriott or Sheraton instead (both are probably better anyway). Last I heard, you could get a 5 star hotel for about $75 on Priceline, but you must pay in advance and no refunds.

If you don't want to use Priceline, do a google search on Landmark Bangkok, and check the price of each travel agent for that hotel.

Many thanks to dagul and Mr Alan for prompt responses. I didn't know that the taxi prices could differ so much. In any case I won't book a texi from the hotel.

I had a look at priceline. Honestly I didn't like their booking rules. It seemed to me more like gambling than a regular hotel reservation system. I did a google search too. All online rates for a superior room at Landmark were about 4500 BHT and valid only until Oct 31 so it seems that their offer of $117 per room (including VAT and service) for Dec-Jan is probably their normal rate.

I always try and stay at the Landmark. Excellent staff and service. Definitely girl friendly and the nice glass and marble shower is great for warmups. The buffets, expecially the seafood one at night, are exceptional. The gym has everything one could want in terms of equipment and it is free of charge. The best site that I have found for rates is

http://www.thailand.travelmall.com/travelmall/hotel/Bangkok+Sukhumvit+Area/Landmark+Hotel+Bangkok

for US$83.

This includes breakfast and all taxes.
The bus (I believe it is the #2) from the airport takes you from the airport arrivals door to Sukhumvit, directly in front of the Landmark for 150 Baht. No haggling or ripoffs and they run every 20 or so minutes. The girls selling the tickets are cute too!
Good luck.

Mr Alan
The taxi price I quoted (300 baht) includes the metered rate, tolls, airport fee, etc. Limos at the airport are typically a fixed rate.

I am sure that the ride supplied by the Landmark is for a limo. Don't forget that if the Landmark sends a limo, they have someone waiting in arrivals for your (with a sign with name on it), and since your flight could be late, or you could be delayed in immigration, they have to charge extra for their time. If you want a limo, just get the 600 baht ones available at the airport. The limos are not necessary stretch limos, but usually slightly larger than Corollas (the standard taxi in BKK).

Any time you get into a taxi in BKK, make sure that meter is turned on as soon as you start moving. If the meter is not turned on, start saying "Taxi Meter" repeatedly in increasing volume until the cab driver turns on the meter. If you are too wimpy to do this, don’t bother coming to LOS. This does not apply to fixed price limos or other negotiated fares. It is usually not a good idea to negotiate a fixed fare unless you are experienced in what the meter fare would be, or traveling a long distance (like to Pattaya).

Great mobius. Thanks for your reply. I checked the site you mentioned and the cheapest rate I got there was US$ 169 per night (excluding tax and service charges). This is more than double the rate you mentioned. Am I missing something obvious here or prices simply go up that much in Dec-Jan.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. This forum is really fantastic.

scobie
The great thing about this site is that the more posts there are, the more diverse the opinions tend to be.

I stayed at Landmark for three nights in February this year. I got a decent corporate rate through my company's offices in Bkk. I think I paid around 2800++ including breakfast - not bad, I guess.

BUT, the girl who booked it for me booked a bloody single room. Disaster!

I picked up this chick from BeerGarden and waltzed through the walk of shame to be stopped by the Security guards who sat us both down at that desk by the lifts, noted that I was in a 'single' booking room and argued the toss over whether I should pay extra. All the time this was happening there were dozens of farang couples entering the lifts, often sniggering into their sleeves at what I was up to.

Anyway, I stood my ground. I told the security that I paid for the room and I dont care if it was single or double - what I do in my room and who I have there is up to me. In the end they backed down

But girl friendly? Girl friendly, my arse. If that's girl friendly, i'm a banana. They also took her ID which - while I accept is for our benefit, doesnt make life any easier.

Just my thoughts. I'm sure other people had better opinions. I haven't stayed there in the three trips i've made since.

It is good to hear a different opinion scobie! So after all your visits to BKK, which hotel would you recommend?

Cheers,
