Well I said I would post my experiences here - so here goes All round a good thumbs up. Good rooms, good bathrooms, good service, free wireless in the lobby bar (although the beer you drink while doing your mail costs 14 times the cost of going to an internet cafe), Brought a girl there who would be home nowhere but on a podium in a gogo. Dress her up, she looks like a bar girl (but of course she dresses in a way that most Bar Girls would consider a bit provocative), she giggles like a bar girl - bar girl through and through - no worries even getting HER in. Walk of shame:- If it bothers you a lot dont stay here, but staff just want an ID card - and you could avoid it if you want to as I did the second time I brought the same girl home - FR will follow and Jojje - 'La Grita' is good.

Stayed at the Westin Grande early summer 2004 and I too wanted to avoid the WOS. Couldn't find any side entrances (like JWM) so I passed on bringing a BG to the room during that visit. Great alternative is the sister hotel right across the street, Sheraton Grande. Costs a few bucks more though. It's an excellent hotel that has a street level entrance (fronting Rivas) where you can easily get to the elevators and avoid WOS through the main lobby. I've stayed at the Sheraton Grande, Westin Grande and JW Marriott. All are top notch. I'm a bit of an airline and hotel points-earning slut, hence my bias towards Starwood Preferred (Sheraton, Westin, W, etc.) and Marriott hotels. I prefer the Sheraton and Westin for their proximity to BTS Asoke Station, 7-11, McDonalds, ATMs, and of course Soi Cowboy. One thing I noticed at the Sheraton is that the staff that come to your room (room service, bell/door staff, butler service, laundry) seem to be real tip-grubbers. I've stayed there 3-4 time in past 2-3 years and this seems consistent. On the other hand, the Westin staff seemed completely opposite. The bell guy went above and beyond to package up a woodwork gift I bought one day, and he flat out refused a tip. I was impressed, needless to say. Think that was the one and only tip refusal I ever got in LOS! I think my only minor gripes during my stay at the Westin was the in-room high speed Internet didn't work so I was relegated to their dial-up service (for fee), the toilet didn't flush well and it almost overflowed after one dump (mid-BM flushes recommended), and the sound system in the bathroom was shorted or something... the volume dial worked fine, but the actual volume options were 'whisper' and 'rock concert', nothing in between. Other than that, I got the same great Westin service and amenities in Bangkok that I've gotten in Japan and Korea. If all goes to plan, I'll be back at the Sheraton or Westin in Feb. Will give an update then. - B -

Hi Gus, can you tell us any more about your winning bid? Was £45 your first offer and how much were the taxes? Thanks.

Just to add a quick review, I stayed at the Westin Nov 7, 28, and 29. Got it $65 US first pop. I liked it mak mak. The first night they put me on the executive floor, but I really didn't notice the difference with the other floors other than the view. Maybe I missed out on a club room or something but I had to bolt for golf at 7:30 am. I didn't have any of the problems baba had, my high speed internet and bathroom speakers worked fine. I also found staff very pleasant, markedly better that Marriott which I also stayed at during November. Made mistake of using minibar and I think a water, coke to mix with my sang tip, and a snack for Tg was ike 650 baht! Gotta lock that f***ker up next time. Great buffet lunch also. The 7th floor bar really does have some nice looking staffers, and had some fun in there with some friends for a few early nightcaps watching the england-aussie rugby match 11/27. My regular TGF and I didn't even get an odd look once during the stay, although sh usually doesn't dress BG-stylie. I really don't think WOS is an issue. Didn't try Kisso sushi bar even though I wanted to. One thing that slightly pissed me off (just thinking about it today as a coincidence) is that the front door staff are numerous and helpful, but try and take a pretty hefty cut on any taxi ride. They ask where you are going and then negotiate with the taxi driver and add markup. Picked up on it second time, as trip to the airport (around 200-300 on meter) and then take TG back to Jomtien (maybe 900-1000 meter) was quoted as 2,000 grand or more (can't remember). I asked why not turn on meter and the Westin hostess said "we write down taxi number in case something happens". Well shit, I got a hand too so balked and immeditely came down 200 baht to 1,800 as Westin obviously just reducing their cut. Reason I prolly remember is because I was late leaving for my plane as snuck in usual last minute boink. Next time I will have them blow the whistle and I will take care of the rest. Good place. Heard Sheraton is even better and pics of pool over there look pretty sweet. JS

The doorman taking a cut of an unmetered taxi fare is common in BKK. It is not authorized by the hotel management and they should be informed of such activities. Please send an email to the management and tell them about it. Same thing happened to me at Admiral Suites, but when I noticed the meter was not on when we departed, I repeated the word "meter" about 5 times in increasing volume until he turned it on. The doorman knew I was going to the airport and "called" the cab even before I asked him to.

What walk of shame, silly premise and dangerous to avoid. It's to your (ya you) advantage for the hotel staff to take her ID card. It make "she's different" think twice before she rips you off.

Big D, The Westin is not Nana Hotel. Some of us like to stay at a place where you can take a normal girl up to your room without her being treated like a Nana plaza Ho. Plus if you bring a strange girl to your room, and first lock everything worth anything in the safe, to include those mini bar bottles of JW, you should be good to go. If you are too stupid to take the right precautions, you need more then hotel security to help you. One of those 7th floor girls is my sometimes TGF, so that is why I stay at the Sheraton now.

Karaoke bars everywhere has always been a faourite pick up place of mine. Pay a hostess for sitting with you and sing allong, ask her if she fancy an overnight and off you go, with her. I have had hostesses from the in-house otel karaoke staying with me. How is that in Westin?

I stayed at the westin sometime last summer, June or July I think, and found it extremely nice. When I checked in, they started appoligizing for overbooking, and then told me that I would be on some executive / members floor. My only complaint was the neighbors, which sounded like a group of loud british women (speaking english with some accent that wasn't american) were in the room on the other side of the adjoining room door. Never had an issue with the walk of shame, wasn't bringing back anything ugly enough to be ashamed about. What really caught me off guard was the first night, I had been up the road at Darling's I think (Massage parlor two or three blocks up, on the other side of sukhumvit) and asked this girl if she would meet me later, gave her the hotel direction card and room number. A little after midnight (she told me 6 oclock, it took me a while to figure that out), there was a knock on the door. I really hadn't expected that she'd just ride up the elevator and knock on the door. I figured someone would've stopped her and called, etc... but, no, she just came up and knocked on the door, as far as I know.
