Quote: from Mel Gibson on 8:01 pm on Aug. 21, 2005 AHHHH priceline SUX.
Priceline offers some good values in the U.S., where breakfast isn't usually included in the price of a night's lodging, the hotel/motel standards are fairly uniform, people are planning a stay of one or two days and travelers most often have access to a car.. But for an extended stay in Thailand, priceline isn't a very good option. More hassle than it is worth.

But Priceline gets to choose which one you get based on availability and the price you bid.
It has nothing to do with the price you bid. If you submit a higher bid, you don't get a better hotel. You get which ever hotel has rooms for the lowest cost to priceline within the area (s) and rating bracket you selected. Simple as that. I got the JW Marriot for $75 per night on my last visit. Even if I only saved $20 per night that still adds up, and paying for my own breakfast in BKK is hardly going to cost me anywhere near that much. Besides, who among us actually gets up early enough to catch the breakfast service anyway? In the end, the savings could get you a free massage or a happy ending or some movies or software. Sounds like a decent deal to me.

I think you are reading too much into what I said. You are correct that one does not necessarily get a better hotel room if one bids more for a given category of hotel in a given area of town. But if you don't bid enough, you may not get any hotel room in the category you are looking for. That is what I meant when I said the bid is price is a factor.

OK Did some more research,, ahh about 300 pages worth Now I get the picture on the bidding process and how one can manipulate to get hotel of choice ( well 1 of two in 5* Sukumvit). Ok I will give it a try but definately wanting at least a 20% discount on normal pricing to compensate for the hassle

Heres a current reference to 5* Suk, and yes, you throw in the River on your rebid- 8/23-30 $65 reject add River $72 reject (offered immediate booking @$82) 4 days later try again @$72 reject, go to JW Marriot website, fully booked!!! go to $82 with changed dates (locked into 2 zone bid at this stage, don't want to add Silom) get Westin, add in the split dates, get Westin DAMN, this is the first time I wont be staying at the JW in years, I always get the JW maybe change is good

Anyone know a good web site where you can book JWM at best rates and not take the gamble of Priceline? I got the Westin before and that is a great hotel but nice to be near Nana

Gus, Best I can find is US$114 at http://www.voyagenow.com and US$115 at http://www.discount-bangkok-hotels.net I would use discount web as I am still awaiting reply from voyage regarding taxes etc so not worth the risk for a dollar. P>S If the reply comes back from voyage web site about no additional taxes etc I will letting everyone know as their prices are VERY competitive. Cheers

Mel Many thanks, JWM lady supervisor of bar even bought me a coke last visit. FWIW theres not much to choose between JWM and Landmark but may be difficult to get Landmark on Priceline. I found a good price for Landmark= to £47 with bestasia or asiabest, a Singapore based agency. With the uncertainty of Priceline allocation plus around 20% on top of the bid it is probably best to get a confirmed booking with a discounting agency if possible. I think all 3 SUK 5* are very good but I could do with 3 or 4 nights Marriott for my reward card.

As far as I can tell, not much recent discussion of accepted Priceline bids. Anyone have recent experience with bidding on 5* Suk hotels (I think only the Westin and Marriott are in the category at this time.) I'm targeting early April. Thanks for any input... r
