Well, just a short update on the Mahatten - I'm staying there right now in 3rd floor, facing Soi 15. I don't hear much noise there - only upcing from street. So not a big problem with that consturction works, but could be on the other side of hotel.
BUT: It really is kind of a shithole! Sory for that - but the rooms maybe were nice in the 1960s - but not much good has happened to them since. So - for anybody interested in staying here and doesn't want to read the whole tread: Don't go here. The lobby is very fine, but above ground level you won't like it. If you want to have a better room and don't care much about lobbies and breakfeast, i'd recommend Penny Black, located directlz in Soi Cowboy.

But although I never stayed there I would recommend the Swiss Lodge to you - can also be booked on the above given site (1200BHT). Costs a little more - but sounds good in discussions in this forum. - If you're able to spend quite a bit more: I would suggest the Majestic Grande to you. Great value for money (2650 BHT) - and I did stay there some days until I found out that I'd better invest the monez I spend there in other activities...

Hi surferskieur, have to agree with your opinions. I stayed at the Manhattan for a night during my last trip out. Like you said, with the exception of the lobby the place was a bit of shithole imo.

I was at the Manhattan Hotel in 2005 and I thought it was fine. I guess its gone downhill. Anyone been to hotels recently at 1,200 baht or less with a buffet breakfast included like Manhattan that are gf in the same area? I know there are other reviews on hotels, but many of them don't have buffet breakfasts included.

In the '1200B a night' category, I would use Swiss Park at Soi 11-1. Swiss Park has good location, clean and decent room, friendly staff, average breakfast, and no trouble with guest. IMO, room is slightly small.
Two others may worth consideration although I don't have the info. I heard that Grand Inn at Sukhumvit Soi 3 was decent. I've never stayed there myself and only have seen the small front entrance.
The new wing of Business Inn ( can't remember it is Sukhumvit soi 7 or soi 11 ) looks good from outside.
I have not stayed there either.
Hotel Palazzo is good and reliable. It is at Rachada. Not sure if you mind the location. I stayed there before and liked it.

bt1200 geez, I pay bt1080 at the Manhattan for a double, just last October. That's what the price has been for me for the last 3 years. They understand now that a double means 2 TG's. Still plenty of hot water too.
The only thing that has changed is the breakfast, the fresh cooked eggs are no longer. It is now premade eggs on the buffet line.
Because of the noise, and complaints from guests after 1am, they now have my room 502 ready for me when I get there. It is separate from the other rooms.
I still haven't found anywhere that can compare at bt 1080.

Never stayed at the Manhattan.
At the lower end of Sukhumvit - could suggest Nanatai mansion - I have posted information on this hotel elsewhere in the hotel issues topic - but at 1000 baht per night - gf and incl of American breakfast - it represents good value.

I have never stayed at the Manhattan, but visited BTF friends (Koolbreez, RetiredinTahoe, Prabal).
I would never describe any of their rooms as shitholes. It's probably just that the nah sayers accept the unrefurbished rooms...
