I was going to stay here...
the taxi almost made it to the hotel.. but then there is a one way street just before Toxic... we could not pass. Barely enough room for a taxi to go. The one way street was going the wrong way. If it is not a one way street, then there is only enough room for one car at a time. This was at about 2PM so lots of trafic around.
This was going down Soi 18 to the end... I could see the Toxic sign but I still do not understand how a taxi makes it there!
My Taxi driver turned left at the last street before the hotel (since he could not drive any further).. he even hit his side mirror because the street was so small.
I do like to walk..... but it does seem very far.

if I am asking the taxi driver from the airport to drop me off near the hotel....what is the best "reference point" I can give him rather than having him go down the soi? is there a main hotel on sukuhmvit to have the taxi drop me off and easily walk to Town Lodge?

I took the taxi to Town Lodge several times and I just kept my money in my pocket until we reached the hotel. I told them to keep going until we got there.
How he got out was his problem.

I agree with expatchuck. Even if you don't speak a word of Thai, it's no hassle to get a taxi to make the trip to TL. Just keep pointing straight ahead once you're on Soi 18. If you absolutely need a point of reference because the driver doesn't understand Soi 18 in English (and that won't be the case at the airport, you'll get the address written in Thai) you can use the Rembrandt Hotel and then keep pointing ahead when the taxi gets to the Rembrandt.
Even if the final 100 feet of Soi 18 (past the left-turn sub Soi that connects with Soi 20) is blocked with parked vehicles, it's still no hassle unless you have a ton of luggage or a significant physical disability. Just walk less than a minute. The one time this happened to me, the hotel's tuk-tuk driver came rushing down the street to carry my suitcase.
