Stayed there long time ago in 1992. Small, clean, private and quiet. Bathroom had just WC, washbasin & flexible shower hose with no enclosure. Their rates are a lot higher now and things may well have changed. GF.

A friend stayed at Manhattan recently. The construction noice is not as annoying as it use to be few months back. Its true that they have started asking 400Bt joiner fee.
Big cross on Manhattan from my list for the time being.

Did your friend book double occupancy in Manhattan?
I stayed in Sept 2002, I paid a joined of 447 B. Had booked single as my travel agent was asking for my companions name. This time I have booked double occupancy.
I hope no joiner fees

I was there in March, 2004. No joiner fee for double occupancy. If there is one now, I'd suggest Honey Hotel, Soi 19. Its not as nice, but it does have basic breakfast, pool, basic room, guest friendly, and 800 baht. For 50 baht more, you get a fridge.

Stayed at the Manhattan for 2 weeks in September 2003. Booked a double, no joiner fee. However, they ask for my room number everytime when I returned with a TG at night to check if I had booked a double or not.
IMHO, Manhattan's location is pretty good and guest friendly, but it's showing its age a bit.

The Promenade - 200 yards down soi 8 on the right, very quiet, guest friendly, clean and cheap, they ask 1000bt, but tell them you stayed there before, and only paid 800bt, as long as you pay cash they will accept that, small pool on rooftop - not the Emporium Suites, [ my top pick in Bangkok] but good value amongst the cheap/handy places.

I stayed there for a couple of nights earlier this yr.
Reasonable but a lot of mossies in room. Looked like "the Chainsaw Massacre" when I woke up in bed one morning and it had nothing to do with deflowering virgins!
Must be some attraction for mossies in this area as often a lot in Lolitas which is just up the soi (8)
