power24,

When were you there last? I meant side room being the room facing Soi Cowboy, farthest from Sukhumvit.

Crikey.Im confused now..I have stayed in a room on the side of the front entrance (what I thought faced in the direction of soi cowboy) and I also stayed at the rear (facing the site of the demolition of clinton plaza). I was at the Manhattan in September.

power24,

My room faced Soi 15 and Soi Cowboy. In other words, the front entrance.

I stayed in Manhattan between Dec 14-20. I tried to bookagain during Jan 2-5 but it was fully booked. Booked double using siam-on line.
I was on the soi 15 side. No noise from the construction. No problem with the girls. Very guest friendly. In room safe good. Room condition ok.

I also stayed in Royal Park View and Tai Pan. Manhattan is far better that these two hotels.

I have to disagree somewhat. Tai Pan is at least as good as Manhattan and maybe even a bit better. The location is quite, the walk to the hotel more charming, and the food is a good deal better (I think manhattan has the worst cooked buffet of the hotels that I have stayed in BKK. ) And finally the rooms are a good deal better.

I like the lobby of the Manhattan more though.

I have to agree with lux. I too like the Tai-Pan much better and now with the Bangkok subway finally in service it got another slight advantage.
The thing that bothered me most regarding Manhattan is the constant hassle you're exposed to when coming and going. I have never managed to get in or out of there without having to fight off the guys trying to sell me some luggage just one more time. With Tai-Pan you have nothing of that.
The only drawback might be that Tai-Pan is not as girl friendly as Manhattan.

I hate to tell you this, but this thread IS NOT about the shit hole Tai Pan, the Tai Pan sucks, it is nothing more than an over-priced time share for rich tourists. All the girls on Sukhumvit (and beach road in Pattaya) that want to "ask you a few questions" are trying to promote the f***ing dump. Read THIS POST And the buffet is priced about 5 times more than it should be.

Let me think why I did not like Tai Pan

1. They require a joiner fee. (I did not pay any joiner fee because I stayed there only three nights and I had one girl for all the three nights)

2. The double occupancy room I was in had three beds. All beds were twin sizes. None was a full size bed.

3. No safe in the room.

4. One day, power was out for 4 hours in the afternoon and I had to run to an MP to cool myself off.

5. The nearest 7/11 or Family Mart type of convenience store is at the mouth of the soi, quite a walk to buy cigarette, ice, etc in the middle of the night.

6. A few hundred Bahts more than the Manhattan rate.

7. I had a pretty hilarious video of the TG trying to draw water into the bath tub using the flexible hand shower : (

I did not try their breakfast though I had two BF coupons for each day. The TG and I almost slept till 10/11 every day and we always missed the BF. However, I liked the Thai/Dutch restaurant that was at the corner of Soi Cowboy. We always had our brunch there and I liked the food there.

The room was pretty large (larger than standard Manhattan double room) but because of the three beds in the room, I did not like it.

Manhattan hotel is well located, very close to NEP, Soi Cowboy, BTS, restaurants, Thai massages, foot massage, the Family Mart (just a few hundred feet away from the main gate), and a Thai eating place next to it. Very guest friendly. It has a large safe where I could put my 15-inch laptop. Room condition is OK. I found the service is also OK. However, after the room service on the first day, I found that they did not change my towels. I asked them to give me 2 fresh bath towels, at least two fresh hand towels, and a new shower cap every day. I also reminded the room service every day and they obliged. I also tipped the two bell boys 40 Baht each and they were very friendly.

BF at Manhattan was OK for me and the TG the frequented me also liked it because it had "Kimchi". I never ate any lunch or dinner.

Those annoying tailor shop, luggage shops etc. In fact I always talked to those guys on my way to and from the hotel. Now I know quite a bit about those guys. All of them are from Burma (the worker not the owner), either working legally or illegally in Thailand for 7 days a week for 12 hours a day. I knew their bosses were mad at me and one day one of the boss (a third generation Indain Sikh in Thailand) tried to convince me to buy suits. I said I don't wear suits and I don't know anybody who wears suits in their workplace. Then he tried to sell me a trouser for 800 Baht. I said it was too expensive. I can buy the same trouser in America for $20, wear it for a few days and if I don't like it, I can go and happily return it to the store. I asked him if I could do the same to a trouser tailored at his shop. Eventuyally on my last day, I bought the cheapest T-shirt from him form 140 Baht and I gave it to the Salvation Army here in the USA after returning. I think it is a market driven thing. People must be buying their stuff otherwise they would not be bothering every passer by. It is just like spam. If there is no market for the spammers, they would not spam.

Overall, for the money, I think Manhattan is OK. If I am looking for a hotel less than $30.night, I will certainly go with Manhattan.

Royal Park view hotel, Noooooo. I have already disputed their offensive joiner fee to my cc company.

The hotel recently told me there was light construction in the back from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. I think it might be going on in the front as well, but I can't confirm it.
