Mel, tried to get The Swiss Grottinio. However not for agents at the moment. Will try again. Sounds like it from what the guys say on the various forums. Much larger rooms. Cheers Saucytim

Quote: from saucytim on 10:27 am on July 10, 2006 Thought all would be interested in my findings. When comparing hotel prices in Thailand, you should make sure you are comparing prices on a level playing field. Some sites advertise the prices in Thai Baht, some in USD. Some sites advertise in Thai Baht, however you get charged in USD. How to do know what exchange rate they will use? Many sites do this. What appears to be the cheapest rate may be doesn't turn out be. We all know who have the cheapest rates. See their FAQS, you will see that your card is charged in USD. Funny as most sites are based in Thailand, pay Baht to the hotel/wholesaler, why are you charged in USD?
I finally got around to answering Saucytim's mail on this issue, and it's more or less the ongoing discussion, so I'll reprint my response here: ------------- I noted that you'd made this point on BTF, and you're quite correct that the various currency exchange rates used can dilute the price comparison issue. Short of asking the website in question what their "cut" of the rate is, I don't have a solution to the problem. The premise of HotelResList is that it compares the advertised rates of the various websites. If a particular website advertises a rate in dollars for a hotel that's actually booked in baht, well, that's their advertised rate. Users comparing rates between websites manually would compare that rate with another, and perform their own manual currency conversion using whatever they thought the official exchange rate to be; and it's that process that HotelResList attempts to automate for them. In the case of HotelResList, I can see two currency conversion issues - the first is that it's comparing rates quoted in THB with those quoted in, say, USD, and converted (by HotelResList) with the "midmarket" rate from XE.com, which they describe as being the average of Buy and Sell ( http://www.xe.com/faq.htm#midmarket ). But most people won't get currency at that rate, they'll get it at a lesser rate (for me, usually about 1% less). Second, there's the skimming issue you mention, where the website adds profit for themselves into the rate. In the case of the first issue, I should probably be padding the rate a bit to make it more realistic. Obviously this padding would be documented in the displayed conversion rate. In the case of the second issue, I can see two possible ways to address it. 1. Document the source currency at the display level. Meaning, indicate which rates are converted from another currency. 2. Make greater attempts to cause the website in question to quote rates consistently in THB. Many of the sites will do currency conversion, even if they initially quote in USD or THB. Although I'm not sure that even this is worthwhile, as they may get rates quoted in THB from the hotels, store them in their displayed-rates database as USD, then re-convert to THB when I tell their website to display the rates in THB instead of USD. Which would entail a double rate conversion, with each level presumably being skimmed for extra money. --------

Hey guys, reviewing old posts on hotel booking sites and have a few questions to get more recent info/updates. Recent experiences using any of these three? Hotelreslist.com precisionreservations.com thaihoteldiscounts.com looking for recent info about who is best and why? Is precisons "guaranteed lowest rate" realistic after reading their fine print? Thanks for replies.....

Hmmmm... precisionreservations and thaihoteldiscount are booking sites. Horelreslist is nothing more than a comparison site, a useless one that is as it only lists the cheapest room at a given hotel without distinguishing between the type of rooms. Looking in a list, it might seem that Booking Site A has the cheapest room in Hotel X and that Booking site C has the most expensive. But notice that Site A lists a standard room and site C lists a Deluxe room. That probably still fails to answer your question. Heard good things about ThaiHotelDiscounts, some BTF used SaucyTim. I even met him at the airport... In comparing prices, add approx 20% to precision...

Gotta dissagree somewhat Dr,,,, I've found hotelreslist an great starting point for my hotel bookings. It is true that Hotel discounter A may have normal rooms cheapest but 'suites" more expensive than Hotel discounter B, but that is rare. Hotelreslist directs yo to the sites so cross comparison is quite simple and most of the time the guys who have cut a better deal with a normal room also have the best suite price ( most of the time). The site also already adds the 21% for precision reservations. The "listing" options is also very handy,,, price most important to you, list from cheapest to most expensive,,,, location most important list by location etc etc. Merry Christmas ( notice no X used) Mel

It's kind of like a DVD comparison site: Let's say 'Harry Potter and the Secret of Eden' AllDVDDiscounts US$12.99 DVDWorld US$11.99 Amazonia US$14.99 Which one would you choose? Without going to the respective sites. because that's of course the use of these comparison sites...

It varies depending on the hotel you wish to book,, sometimes ( most often) Asiarooms has the best deal but with some its Thaihoteldiscounts or R24.org or Gothailand.com etc etc etc,,,, which is exactly why I use hotelreslist.com to compare as a starting point. Check the price you got and compare against the offers linked through http://hotelreslist.com/thailand/bangkok/location.twinPrice.name.THB.26.html Ensure, as Dr Love states, that you are comparing the same standard of room etc. Cheers MG
