MG,

You don't HAVE to wear lycra shorts. As a matter of fact, it is not recommmended. Besides, there are some hotties there and so far I got one phone number but I am thinking too much hassle explaining where the hell I am going all the time. Too many girls and too little time. I rather pay for it!!

Gyms expect post-holiday surge
=========================

Fitness centres are expected to cash in on the ongoing festive season, targeting a surge in the number of visits of at least 20% during the first three months of next year.

Rakchart Onchan, the senior fitness manager of Fitness First, said clients would exercise more, bringing the total number to visits at its 12 clubs to around 345,000 per month, up from 288,000 normally.

''After so many parties, many people are horrified to see pot bellies return and the damage done to their skin. It's not easy to get rid of excess fat and rejuvenate your body after heavy drinking. You need to work out more than usual,'' said Mr Rakchart.

But prevention is better than a cure, he added. People making the rounds of parties should focus on vegetables and fruits, avoid food heavy in carbohydrates and fat, especially for dinner, and try to find the time to work out at least three times per week.

''This is actually basic knowledge, but something that is so difficult to follow. And many people will give up eventually,'' Mr Rakchart said.

According to health specialists, the daily calories one needs are the number of calories required to maintain weight. As one pound of weight is equal to 3,500 calories, if a person wants to lose weight, he should either consume 3,500 fewer calories per week or consume 2,000 fewer calories and burn 1,500 calories more by exercising. On the contrary, to gain a pound, he needs to increase his intake by 3,500 calories.

In shedding those unwanted calories, jogging one hour could burn 521 of them, which is equal to a dish of fried rice. Cycling for one hour at a speed of 14.4 kilometres per hour can burn the energy one gains from eating one McDonald's Big Mac hamburger.

Older people may resort to plastic surgery, which has become increasingly popular as a shortcut to maintaining their figures.

But Mr Rakchart said liposuction, fad diets and food supplements were no real substitute for maintaining a balanced diet and exercising regularly.

''However, I believe that most people choose to work out because it's safer and cheaper than surgery and diet pills. Importantly, it's the best way to keep a good shape and maintain weight in the long run,'' said Mr Rakchart.

He said the health-conscious trend, which had given rise to the fitness business, would continue to spur its growth next year.

Fitness First next year plans to open three new clubs to increase its network to 15. The company expects to increase the number of its members to 41,000 next year, up from 35,000 in 2006, with over 60% of them women, he said.

Fitness First now captured more than 50% of a market worth around 4.2 billion baht, he added.

At California WOW Xperience, the first fitness operator to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, executives expect visits to jump to 200,000 per month during the holiday season from 175,000.

Janeen Lyons, a California WOW spokeswoman, agreed that the fitness market, particularly for women, offered strong growth potential.

''I believe that when people eat more they will exercise harder as well. The point is, most people dream of having a firm body and a good shape. By working out, they can make their dream come true,'' she said.

Recently, California WOW Xperience invested more than 160 million baht to launch a new club to exclusively serve women. Located at Phoenix Tower in Sukhumvit 31, the club offers more than 200 fitness classes per week.

''We plan to open seven more clubs next year, bringing the total to 14,'' Ms Lyons said.

Report from The Nation dated Thursday 4 January 2007 :-

Thumbs down for late work-outs
=========================

Experts are warning against the growing trend of doing workouts late at night as it could do more harm than good because of the effect on sleep patterns.

As people become more and more health-conscious, gyms are springing up everywhere to meet the demand for physical exercise venues that suit urban lifestyles. The gyms compete furiously to draw in new customers with dog-eat-dog marketing strategies.

"Exercise is undoubtedly good for health, but only if it is done properly and at the right time, too," said Dr Pichet Udomratn, a professor of psychiatry and head of the Prince of Songkla University's Sleep Disorders Service and Research Centre.

Humans have a so-called biological clock that controls their bodies, telling them when it is time to sleep or to wake up in a pattern called the wake-sleep cycle, said Pichet, who is also president of the Psychiatry Association of Thailand.

When it is time to sleep, the body's core temperature, for example, gradually begins dropping which manifests in people feeling sleepy and wanting to go to bed. But doing physical exercise interrupts this natural process, he said.

Physical exercise causes the core-body temperature to rise, meaning that people needed some hours to cool down after a gym session, Pichet said.

Many people exercise late at night after work and then go to bed shortly afterwards, he said, adding they faced difficulty in getting to sleep or took a considerably longer time to fall asleep.

Normally, it should not take a person more than 30 minutes to go to sleep, said Assoc Prof Naiphinich Kotchabhakdi, a sleep-medicine expert with Mahidol University's Neuro-Behavioural Biology Centre.

People should allow at least three to four hours to lapse after exercise before going to bed as this gives the body time to calm down and be ready for a good night's sleep, he said. If the body is not fully ready to rest, the quality of sleep would not be as good.

Playing hard with small children before their bed time, as many parents who go home late at night are tempted to do, harms their sleep quality like the effects of late night exercise in adults, said Dr Nittaya J Kotchabhakdi, a sleep-medicine researcher with the National Institute for Child and Family Development.

"We tend to underestimate the impact of lack of sleep," said Naiphinich, adding local studies had found about half of the Thai population had sleeping problems to some extent. About 10 per cent had severe problems.

Moreover, lack of sleep was found to contribute to 20 per cent of road accidents that killed or caused disabilities, he said.
