You seem like a very nice guy if a little reactionary. I'm not at all trying to be disresprectful. I'd just say no need to worry Thailand is Thailand and will do just fine. No one will be gutting farangs in the street anytime soon.
I've been to Thailand during:
SARS, Bird Flu (several times), Tsunamis, and the bombings 2 years ago...the bombings were a tiny bit worrisome but I had no more control over that as I do the crazy people that drive around me on my daily commute in Silicon Valley. Also Cambodia is way more off the hook in places and for that matter Burma.
I'm still disappointed that I wasn't in LOS during the last coup d'etat. Now it appears I've missed this one as well. C'est la vie...
I'm getting ready to travel with the littel brown wife and baby and my biggest concern at the moment is: will both the Grottino and Town Lodge be booked in June? If so I may try to prebook the Majestic.
I love Thailand and all it's peculiarities.

Ok so who's the wise guy that labeled both the soap and shampoo dispensers as shampoo. Green or pink, pink or green. I don't like having to make difficult decisions so early in the morning!!!!
