Hi,
I'm traveling to BKK on 2Mar for my 1st visit. Is it easier to travel to Soi Cowboy or Nana Plaza from the Shangri-La.

And the BTS has stops at the Shangri-La, Nana and Cowboy. Very convenient.
Actually, with the BTS you can reach all areas easily (Patpong, Soi Cowboy, Nana, Sukhumvit Soi 22).
Only after midnight you have to resort to a taxi. But as said, the main areas (SC,Nana) are only a few minutes apart.

Don't make the mistake of taking a taxi during rush hour, you'll be sorry. The BTS is only a 5 minute walk from the Shangri-La (Saphan Taskin), transfer at Siam, and get off at Nana or Asok for NEP or SC, respectively. Fare is 35 baht, takes about 20 minutes. Taxi costs about 70-80, as I recall. Patpong (Sala Daeng) is much closer, 6 minutes by BTS.

I've stayed at the Shang 6 times. Standard rooms in the Shangri-La wing (the older wing) are a modest disappointment, IMHO, after walking through their super lobby. If you don't mind spending a little extra, I would recommend upgrading to a Horizon Room for $50/night more. High floors, great views of the river, super bathrooms (much nicer than standard ones), and complimentary cocktails from 5 PM to 7 PM in the Horizon lounge (with free internet access, but only 2 terminals).
No problem bringing girls up, but I often got some nasty looks from older women on the elevators.

Rooms in the Krungthep wing are very nice, similar to the Horizon rooms, but without the free cocktails. Like the Horizon rooms, they have a balcony, and are facing the river, so you get an excellent view. In particular, I recall the power drapes, so you can open the drapes in the morning from a bed-side switch.
Both Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy are a few minutes walk from the BTS station. SC is one block from Sukhumvit, perpendicular to Asoke. Nana is on Soi 4, a half-block from Sukhumvit.
