I have just had the mother of all rows at the Emerald on Ratchada on the subject of fees for a guest in the room. This is my second trip in 6 weeks and despite some poor hotel reviews, stayed at the Emerald for best part of a week back in January. I booked a double De Luxe room and was very pleased with the room and hotel. Had a few visitors that first trip without problem, though security is on the ball in the sense that they are visable (as it should be) but no questions asked. Back again this week and just had a girl sent round at about 19.30. She called up to say I needed to go down to speak to securuty. When I got there I was asked to see the desk to sign for an extra charge. By now the temperature is rising and I explained to the desk clerk, who is only doing his job as instructed, admittedly, that if I was charged 600B for this person, who works for me (technically true, after all) I would not be staying again. I then took her up to my room. Five minutes later the phone rings, as I half expected it would, and I have one of those 'am I talking to a human being or a machine' type of conversations. 'This is the duty manager (female, sounded quite sexy actually) our hotel policy is to charge for guests staying in your room ' me 'I am staying for my second week in the last two months, if there is a charge on my room I will not be staying again' (duty manager) ' Sorry sir, this is the policy in Bangkok (bollocks) we have to charge for a guest in your bedroom' (me) 'Right, what don't you understand about this, she is not staying in my bed, and this is my policy, if you charge for this visitor who is leaving in less than two hours from now, I will never stay here again' This went on for several minutes until she said someone would be coming up to get my signature for the charge. At that point the phone went down, my end. Within minutes of the girl leaving the phone went and the same girl with a smirk I thought, (if a voice can smirk), said 'I thought I would wait for you to have a shower before calling you, to let you know that we will be putting the charge on the room'. OK, so here's the deal. They will put the charge on the room. I don't give a s*it about 600B, it's the principle. I will never stay in the hotel again, which could amount to five or six weeks in total in the next twelve months. Who is the loser in all of this, me? I can stay in any number of similar or better hotels within five minutes of the Emerald. Just what is the point of this, all the hotels in Bangkok know that guys are going to take girls to their rooms, just accept it, for Christs sake. I do understand that if you book a single and then try to have someone stay overnight they have a point, but we are talking about a double room and someone staying two hours! Frankly, if I book a room in a hotel I will do whatever I like in it, short of damaging the room or disturbing other guests. Whose business is it what anyone does?

One member put the joiner fee on his credit card, then contested the charge with his credit card company when he got home. This may be an effective way of dealing with joiners. I also didn't like the uncertainty of potentially being stopped at some hotels I've stayed at. Sometimes they would let me pass with a girl, other times I was asked to pay a fee by security, so I also avoid the hotels where this has happened to me. I never paid a joiner with cash, since I wondered if security would just pocket it. One hotel stopped me once, but let me register the girl on the spot without a fee, since I had booked a double. Best thing is to check the forum's list of guest friendly hotels, or contact the hotel beforehand for a clarification on their policy.

Can't you avoid the expense by telling the bird at check in that you will be sharing the room with a friend, but she is not due to arrive until later?

that works great until you change friends five times in one day, like some of us ;-} I remember checking in with a gal I brought from Pattaya and then showing up later with an Eden gal, but the staff at the hotel I stay at just smile

Here's to all your whiners.... You have to respect the fact that hotels (especially those in the 4 and 5 star grade) do cater to other clientele than whoremongers only. It is not a pretty sight for upscale clientele if Miss Lek from Nana walks through your hotel lobby with her tits hanging out or a skirt just a little too short. Joiner fees have been created to discourage guest to bring hookers into the hotel. You can either: - Do your sexual pleasures in a short time hotel - Pay the joiner fee - Or move your business to another hotel. I just laugh at those who think that a manager is impressed that they will miss your 10 days stay this year or the years to follow. Didn't you notice his 'f*** you' face when he walked off... Remember, you stay in a hotel, you obey to the rules. You may have success in booking a double. But a lot of hotels are of course not stupid and still slap you with a joiner fee. It's your choice... you pay it or not. As a former executive of a large travel agent in Bangkok I always stayed free but was sometimes also hit up for a joiner fee. Also putting joiner fees on credit card is pretty stupid as these fees are usually on the bill and you have signed for it. Why not contest the whole bill....? As Thaiaficianado said it's your job to check which hotels are girl-friendly and base your choice on that.

You don't mention if you had booked a double this time. Did you inform the duty manager that you had paid for a double?

I find concept of the joiner fee quite confusing. Certainly if the hotel was interested in preventing guests from bringing in prostitutes, they could enforce a policy of only allowing registered guests into the rooms. Many hotels have such a policy, just try visiting Las Vegas sometime. Each guest must display a room key to access the elevators. If the purpose of the fee is to generate more revenue for the hotel, will the revenue from the joiner fees exceed the revenue lost from future bookings? It depends on what percentage a hotel's revenue comes from repeat business. In my experience, even the hotels that have joiner fees don't uniformly enforce them. They're occasionally enforced, enough to annoy you, but maybe not enough to prevent you from booking the hotel again. So what's the real purpose of the joiner fee, from the hotel's perspective? I've stayed in several upscale hotels (Shangri-La, JW Marriott, Sheraton Grande,Westin) without a joiner fee. I can only conclude the joiner fee is intended to generate more revenue for the hotel.
