Yes, my preferred place to stay when in Pattaya.

Is it good ?

I like it, but depends on what your criteria is for "good", is it location, is it cheap, is it 5 stars, is it guest friendly, is it staff friendly, is it clean, does it have cable etc etc.

BTW - You've spelt it wrong

OK, I'll spill the beans....but if I find out that I can’t book any rooms here because of availability then I’m deleting this post LOL

Second time in Pattaya and the taxi driver couldn't find the hotel that I was supposed to go to (Residence Gardens) and I didn’t have the number handy etc. He suggested this place and while I was a bit dubious on the whole "good hotel" story, I thought it couldn't hurt to have a look.

While the place was different to what I was use to (tiled floor instead of carpet for instance) for the money I thought it was a good deal considering the price/quality of other hotels I've stayed in Pattaya. I felt that the “feel” of the room was comparable to the Amari and I paid 4 times the price for that room. There are three rooms at 600, 700 and 800 baht inclusive. I've stayed in the 600 and 800 baht rooms. The 600 and 700 are the same rooms but the 700 is a bit bigger and has a sofa from memory. I stayed at the 800 because it has a bath and 600 and 700 rooms have no shower trays and therefore the entire bathroom floor gets wet - which I don't like. As well as the bath the 800 rooms are obviously bigger again. I quite like the corner rooms with their layouts. All rooms have TV's, large fridge, dvd players, all have king/queen beds and cable TV (Don't ask me what channels as I don't really pay attention that much to it). All the windows are mirrored so you can leave the curtains open and retain you and your tgf privacy.

The hotel is run by a German and his thai wife and must say that he is a pretty friendly and approachable guy from what I found. They have a bar down stairs and a kitchen and small open dining area or they will bring to your room. The bar (which also doubles as the reception most times) is usually busy enough with people (usually germans and similar europeans) sitting around drinking and talking to each other. The bar has a lot of smoke hanging around (should invest in some extraction fans for us non-smokers).

The hotel also has a small "night club" off to a side and has a pool table and another bar - but this one has much darker lighting and a bit of music etc. While I've never been in, I have seen thai girls playing pool in there - but never bothered to stop and investigate as I'm usually on my way out to walking street or the beer bars etc. Also have a small pool, but more of a dip and laze around rather then swimming.

Walking street is about a 5min walk and Residence Garden is about a 5'ish min walk the other way if you have friends staying there. There is a mototaxi right outside of the hotel and as you walk out you will get a clap of hands from them seeing if you want a lift (which usually just involves a nod). 20 baht to Walking street or halfway up second road. Soi 8 is 30 baht from memory and Big C probably 40baht. I suppose if you wanted to be cheap or haggle you could probably get dropped off at Second Rd for 20 baht and catch a baht bus for 10 to Big C if you want to save yourself 10 baht......

Also right outside the hotel is a Family Circle, 2 laundries, and a massage place (no funny business offered nor wanted) and the massage varies according to who is on at the time. You can also see from the hotel according to a thai girl a massage place by the blind which she believes are good at massages. Don't know the name but from memory its a pink lowset building. Also if you walk down the soi (Soi Yen Sabi) there are more laundries, a 7-11, food stalls and a few restaurants around, a couple of tailer shops (the ones where they actually make your suits and shirts) and a few internet cafes around. There are also a few travel agencies and places where you can book your 800 baht return trip to BKK. Also a market a short walk away on Mon and Thur’s (don’t quote me) which I find interesting to walk through. Another thing, apparently as you walk down the Soi towards walking street there is a sub-soi (??) to the right which is as my thai girl says is for the "gay boys" - lots of neon around, but never walked in to look around – but was surprised by the number of places that I could see.

There are also 2 other hotels in the Soi and looks like it cater to the arabs because thats about 95% of people I see going in and out.

So in reply to ant, and the criteria:

clean: Yes
friendly staff: Yes 95% of time
it is guest friendly: Yes
be quiet for sleep: Yes
central location: No

With central location - depends on where you like to hang out. If its the beer bars of Soi 7 & 8 etc, then you would probably not like the location. If its Walking street, I quite enjoy the walk there and back or the 1 minute mototaxi ride if I’m running late or feeling lazy. Also on location, the hotel reminds me of Royal President where you normally have to walk up to Suk to be amongst it all. If you like to walk out of your hotel and be right in it - I hear the Eastiny isn't bad - but I personally like to have a bit of a "buffer". While the location might be a problem for some, the access to all the other amenities imho makes up for it twofold. Lets face it, who really wants to lug around laundry for a block to avoid the ripoff that most hotels charge. This hotel use to have a pretty good laundry service at “street prices”, but on my last trip the price list was gone and I felt that the rate charged had a small “premium” on it – but can’t conform 100% as I didn’t bother doing the maths properly. But as I had a choice of two laundries immediately outside the hotel – I threw it in a bag and dropped it off as I left the hotel every second day.

The 600 rooms are a bargain imho and you can go to their website if you want to check out the room etc. Next month I'll be staying there and while I normally book ahead, I don't know what my dates are and hoping to just rock up. While I still stay on the look out for another hotel and will look at a few each trip, I seem to come back to this hotel.

Let me know if you have any other specific q’s – but I’ve tried to cover what I thought is relevant.

Cheers

No problem, here it is http://www.hotelkoenig.com/e-index.htm

Cheers

Edit - Just noticed looking through their website that they refer to the hotel both as "Konig" and "Koenig". Checked a card I have and its spelt with an "e". The card spells it with the "e" but the "coat of arms" on the card and the website has it without the "e". Must enquire about this next month.

My apologies to the original poster spelling it without the "e".

If the owner is a German, the original name/word would probably be "König" which is a very familiar German family name and the German word for "King".

"Koenig" is the normal way to spell "König" for any non-German audience, keyboards and 7 bit character-sets or sometimes "Konig" by the very lazy people...

Bad Idea to give a Thai hotel a name with a German charcater-set specialty.

How about a Beer Bar called "Řl Bar" (Beer in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish... much more familiar worldwide though)

Seems to be a nice place though..
