book online on their www, exec suite package is huge and inc all merc transfers, laundry, internet etc, usually only aboyt $200-250pn - thats a bargain believe me.
also I always just stay in the normal bit, as krunthep wing is very quiet and seems "exclusive" and therefore more attention to your guests when arrive. however I have never had a problem in the other entrance, its v gf.

It's not opulent. Nice and upscale, but you need to cross the river and go to the Peninsula if you want opulent and a truly world-class spa.

While that wing is newer, it's only relative. The hotel hasn't been renovated recently and does show its age a bit. Still a solid 4-star though.

The Krung Thep wing is also a longer walk from the restaurants, which are mostly in the original wing.

actually nearly all the rooms have been recently renovated now.
and the new chi spa is excellent.
the shangri-las are great hotels, the 2 in hk are great (kowloon tapas bar has nice staff!)
dubai one is good but obviously being in dubai its a bit "limited" - staff have no common sense etc

I suggest the Shangri-la over the Peninsula...better location, cheaper and bigger rooms.....Peninsula is kinda dark and too snobbish.....or else, the mighty Oriental is always there for people that really know what service and quality are all about....

I consider the JW Marriott a 4-star, the Conrad a 4-star, and the Sheraton Grande a 4-star. Putting the Shangri-la in the same class as those 3 are a compliment.

The great hotels like Peninsula, Banyan Tree, etc... deserve the true 5-star label. A merely upscale luxury hotel like Shangri-la doesn't.

I "partially" agree with this statement......as my job gets me to work with all the hotels, I can assure that the management of the Shangri-la in Bangkok is made of big time losers.....when it comes to deliver services, this hotel goes to the same level of a 3 star......but still, the rooms and the facilities are up to the avarage standard of a 5 star hotel....

The Krungthep wing of the Shangri-la is my favorite. It's definitely 5-star. I think it's a lot better than the Peninsula and I even prefer it to the Oriental because of its location and views of the river. Since I'm a regular customer, I usually get a suite in the Krungthep wing for $275 per night if space is available. It's huge with a separate bedroom and separate living room with a dining area. Both rooms have balconies with great river views. The bathroom is enormous---as big as some hotel rooms with marble floors, huge tub, large showeer stall. I also like the pools at the Shangri-la, but I prefer the pool in the main wing. I like the Krungthep wing because it has a more exclusive feel. Staff is very friendly and gives great service.

No problem bringing up guests, but I try to be discrete. I often enter the hotel from the main wing, go up a floor and walk to the Krungthep wing through the upper floor, so they will not see me bringing my guest upstairs. I take the elevator up from the upper floor.
