I just made reservations in a standard room, in the new wing at Lek Hotel overlooking the pool. I made the reservation requirements clear when making them. Reservations sent back an email saying OK, send credit card information. I did. Then the following response came back.
"Thank you for your reply confrim 1 standard room new wing high floor swimming pool side if possible check in XXXXXXXX at room rate of Baht 1,200.-/night gaurantee 1 night deposit by credit card VISA CARD"
The "if possible" tells me the hotel will put me into any room that they happen to have available when I check in. Anybody have any suggestions how to make sure I get the room in the part of the hotel I want? So far, they have not responded to my request for confirmation of the room that I want.

Since I have no experience reserving a hotelroom, because I never had any trouble getting a room, it is maybe worth nothing to you. But are you not reading to much in that email. Is it not standard practise???
You want a room poolside. Now what if BigDUSA jumped into that pool??? I know at 1200 B per room that is not likely, but what if....? Then the whole poolside of the hotel would have tsunami damage. Wouldn't you be happy they honoured your reservation and still gave you a room in an undamaged part of the hotel?
So you will get your room unless..........
I never got into a hotel that was unwilling to give you an other room if it was available. So go with a smile on your face and leave your worries at home. Even if all the rooms are taken, you can not convince me that on the second day nobody leaves those precious rooms. And if they don't you can always drown them in the pool and claim you found a tsunami victim.
If this is the mood you take with you on vacation, then no amount of BG's can get a smile on your face.

Arrived in Pattaya once without a booking in the Middle of a holiday period, getting a room was difficult.
The third hotel I tried, the Montien, had one room available, but it was not very nice. But I took it, didnt want to waste all day finding a room.
Anyway, tipped the lady 200 baht and thanked her for her kind efforts in accomodating me during the busy season.
Got back to the hotel a few hours later and the same lady showed me 3 other nice rooms which had somehow become available.
As they say, go figure. and enjoy your trip

I think the 'if possible' refers to 'check in XXXXX' not to the room type...
