There are some discussions about public wireless internet areas in the Tech section. I did a search, and did not find a specific section about this topic in this thread. So here it is. A wireless internet connection in room / hotel is a great way to hook up your laptop or Pocket PC to the Internet. Skype is one option for very cheap phone calls home. At top of my head, in Bangkok: President Solitaire, (Sukhumvit soi 11), Westin hotel (Sukhumvit soi 19). Would be cool to get some info about other parts of Thailand (Pattaya, Phuket...).

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 27 March 2006 :- Starwood extends 'lifestyle' image : Hotelier will follow response to the Link ============================================= These days it is not difficult to feel connected to people at home when you are away as the Internet allows you to link up whenever you want. Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc believes in this concept and is offering internet lounges in its Sheraton hotels to reinforce the brand as a lifestyle hotel. One of the first sites is the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel on the bank of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, where US-based Starwood holds a majority stake of 44%. Starwood has invested millions of baht into the Link@Sheraton. Link@Sheraton, developed in partnership with Yahoo, offers free internet access, PC workstations, a seating area, and international newspapers and magazines. "It's a place where guests can relax outside their rooms," said Chad Waetzig, Starwood's senior vice-president for marketing from New York. Link@Sheraton has been piloted at five Sheraton hotels. Besides Bangkok, the other hotels are in San Diego and Boston, in the US, Brussels and Buenos Aires. Starwood plans to monitor guests' response to the Link over the next two months before rolling out the programme to other Sheraton properties around the world, Mr Waetzig told the Bangkok Post. It would take about a year to expand the concept to all Sheraton hotels because it would involve renovating each hotel and training staff, said Mr Waetzig. He added that, with the new lounges, as a lifestyle hotel, Sheraton should be able to connect to its consumers better. Starwood's brandnames include St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, Sheraton, Westin, W, Four Points by Sheraton and Le Meridien. Neil Palmer, senior vice-president for the operations of Starwood Asia Pacific Hotels & Resorts Pte Ltd, who is based in Singapore, said of a total of 850 properties Starwood operates around the world, about 129 of them are in the Asia-Pacific. Nine of those properties are the company's own or joint ventures, another 28 are franchised and the remaining 92 belong to other owners, managed by Starwood. Mr Palmer said Asia-Pacific was now a significant market for Starwood showing strong growth driven by economic booms in China and India. More travel destinations in the region were also developing, which provided a lot of room for hotel developers to expand their businesses. This year, he said, Starwood would sign up to 30 management contracts for new hotels in Asia-Pacific. For Thailand, Wayne Buckingham, vice-president for Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, said Starwood had 14 properties under the brands Sheraton, Westin, Le Meridien and Four Points. Four new properties would be added to Thailand's portfolio in the next three years. However, Starwood had not directly invested in the four new properties, but it had signed the contracts to manage them. They were in Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin and Bangkok's Surawong area. Starwood was also looking at signing more management contracts with hotels in Koh Samui and Phuket in the near future, said Mr Buckingham.
