Yes, I'm a newbie. But I've been diligently trying to find out as much info the last two weeks from this site.
My question is... How far is The Oriental hotel from the action in Sukhumvit or Ratchadapisek? Is it best to go by cab? By train?
I've found maps through google and it looks far, but I have literally no idea.
Any help would be great. Thanks!

You are quite aways away from those places. I'd personnally change hotels if you can.
The BTS sky train is about 3 blocks away. Get off at the nana, or asoke stop after you change trains at siam square. At the asoke stop, catch the subway to get to ratchadapisek. Then remember, they all quit running at midnight.
Cab can be 20 - 90 minutes to get to the same place depending on the time of day, or longer.
The JW Marriot is on sukhumvit, just a walk up the street. The Oriental is on the river away from pretty much everything. I'd change hotels.

Problem with Oriental is not near the BTS and have to used taxi to get anywhere you want. I would agree with koolbreez, it is too far for me.
However, great place to have dinner. All three resturant are nice, The thai, french and chinese.

Where is Oriental Hotel, what suburb.
Heatwaves I am still a newbie, but know of these great action areas, suburbs, Sukhumvit, Asoke,Nana, Wattana. All the girls you want are in these areas, once you get familarised with those areas, you can branch out to Patpong, a red light area also, but about US $1.70 from the 4 areas I mentioned.
Other members of BTF are more experienced and I know time is not on your side. They might still be able to get to you in time to change your plans. If you have only paid for a couple of nights at the Oriental, and it is far away, then sorry...forget about those paid nights. You will make up for it by not catching BYS (Sky train), taxis and time to the good areas.
Look at more maps of Bangkok, to me they are the best areas for me, you may come across places called NEP (Nana Entertainment Plaza) Soi Cowboy, Washington Square, they are in the areas and full of chicks, go go bars etc.

The Oriental is not to far away from Patpong,but if you are considering partaking of any action you would not be advised to stay in the Oriental as the chances of you taking any girls back there are slim... They have a reputation tp keep up you know!!!

Stay in the Oriental by all means....its one of the best hotels in the world. Rent a room in another hotel to play. Simple safe solution.

The Oriental Hotel is on the river - to get to Sukhumvit, you'd have to haul your butt over to Saphan Taksin BTS station and take the train to Nana (approx. 25-30 min.). To get to Ratchadapisek, you'd have to get off the BTS train at Asoke (next station after Nana) and take the subway up north to Huai Khwang/Suttisan - add another 20-30 minutes. Like the other poster said, BTS closes at midnight.
Seriously though, with all the logistics headaches, why not stay closer to the action? If you have the money to stay at Oriental, might as well go for a place like Landmark - four stars, great hotel, literally where the action's at.
Also, it seems that the Oriental has a strict "no guests" policy - I can't comment on how strictly it's enforced, but FYI.

You are a long way from Suk action, but not too far from Patpong action. Patpong is not the good action.
Traffic in Bkk varies, as anyplace, but from Sukamvit you may need 30 minutes to get the Oriental by taxi...but what a hotel......

Have to concur with what's been posted. Oriental is a fantastic hotel, possible the best in the world, but very inconvenient in terms of action. P4P girls are absolutely forbidden (can't even register together with them) and given the level of security/staffing at the Oriental, the tales of sneaking in girls are probably urban myths. Don't deny yourself the experience of staying at the Oriental at least a few nights. Just accept it will be a bit of a hassle in traffic to get close to the action
