Guys,

Im beginning to feel the need to get back there. This time I want to save on taxi fare by being as close as possible to the BTS as possible. Affordability is important as well and GF is a bonus.

Right now the hotel I'm looking at is Asia Hotel as it seems to fit the criteria. Anyone know any alternatives, especially on Suk?

take your pick....

Grottino
Landmark
Majestic Suites (small)
Westin
Grande Sheraton
JW Marriot

Personally I'd go Grottino...convenient, clean, not too expensive, discreet.......also has the added benefit of being at the interchange with MRT.

Depends where you are going...but taxi fares aren't exactly expensive, and the BTS not exactly cheap, so the savings are minimal.....

Personally I take a taxi over BTS any day....only consideration is traffic.

Hope the Park hotel has improved.

I stayed there a night two years ago..... it was old and stale (first stayed there in 1992, when it was quite nice). The corridor was gross and the carpets just disgusting. I requested to move rooms at 10pm. Went from the front wing to the side wing. A little better, but still left next day.

I had tried to make an overseas call to someone who was out. They tried to charge me for me each and every attempt, minimum charge as well. Took quite an arguement to get it off the bill.

Prize for the most ridiculous lift in Thailand as well.....

Shame really cos an excellent location, but unless someone can say it's improved I wouldn't bother.

If you're going to be active in p4p, I would go with the Majestic Suites or Grottino - both are very short walk to BTS also. Book early, as they both fill up.

Asia Hotel: http://www.bts.co.th/en/mapframe.asp?s=N1
It is right next to BTS and it is very good value, but I do not know if it is guest friendly.

There's also Swiss Park Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 11 just around the corner from Nana Skytrain Station.

A few points about the Asia:

1) the hotel's dedicated BTS entrance shuts at 11.00pm - a full hour before the Skytrain station (Ratchechewi) itself

2) it is GF but unless you can befriend and drop a serious tip to a senior manager, there's a 600 Baht joiner fee every time

3) the hotel is massively popular with tour groups (European especially) and is used as a 3 day opener to twin-centre vacations, e.g. 3 nights Bangkok, 11 nights Hua Hin or Phuket or Pattaya or wherever. It's their main business and leads to long, crowded checkout queues most mornings

4) the Asia was exceptionally well run until the Swiss boss left approx 6 years back. Nowadays maintenance and service are reduced and the place is a bit run down.

5) tour groups, backpackers and common or garden tourists occupy floors 11 and below. For privacy and security it's best to arrange accommodation on the 15th to 17th Executive floors ( (there's even a trio of lifts that exclude the 1st 11). Again, a healthy tip in the right pocket may help.

Location-wise, it's excellent. Petchburi Road and MBK are walkable, an Arab money changer that offers some of the best exchange rates is en route to MBK and there's a mega cheap & fast laundry in the Thai community around the back.

the biggest plus of the bts system is that it is not a taxi...lol.

if you want affordable try the hotel next to the empty lot fronting the ambassador on the mbk side.

700 baht per night...... I looked at the rooms and it seems ok. if you run into the gay guy you are at the right place....lol.

ive stayed at nana hotels and the asia hotel. I would never stay at asia if nana hotels have rooms. bts stops at midnight and not much within walking distance.
im gonna give it a try. I figure majestic suites for 27 nights is 810$. 27 nights at 700 baht is 473$. thats = to 4 short times for me...lol. or 8 for you who pay 1000 baht st.

Guys, thanks a lot for your input, especially those of Artisan.

Im not that concerned about the 11pm shutdown as I supposed if its that late I would be taking a cab. I am a bit put off by the whole tour group thing though... I guess the search goes on. I dont want to stay in the Baiyoke Sky again even if the rooms were VERY pleasant.

I'd love to try the Grotinno or the Landmark except that I dont think my travel agent has booking access there. For some reason the tickets come much much cheaper with a hotel package over here.

Will keep looking. Thanks all!

Why not find out the hotels you do have an option on and list them, then you will get best advice.

It is a common mistake to think that hotels charging a joiner fee are girl friendly.
