Anybody recommend a GF decent hotel (preferably with swimming pool) near the Khao San Road and /or Royal Palace which does a good breakfast?

Not sure about the pool, but for every other reason-location, cleanliness, lunch buffet, staffing the Viengtai Hotel is a great choice.
Make certain you check out the lunch buffet at least once. It earned a very nice write up in the Bangkok Post just a few months ago. Priced at around Bt180.

Mel- Sorry, let me clarify two things.
1- I see no pool on the hotel's page and I have not seen a pool [nor looked for it] on the two occasions I was at the Viengtai Hotel.
2- When I give advise, I always try to post the sources web site. But I always advocate shopping around for value.

Surely it's no surprise that its two australians who are the most helpful.
Its no wonder that Oz (and its inhabitants) are held in such high regard by peple from the uk, even though we brits do make convict jokes etc..etc..!!
Girl friendly is the key not the pool, I want the khao san rd because I do the marathon in november. But also how EASY is it to pull in places like gullivers in the khao san rd!! (albeit it I am 28 and good looking).

machoman,, no worries re the convict jokes,, we know it was just a ruse for the free holiday and free citizenship given to the best of the Britt's .
I cannot help re the girl-friendly bit,, a phone call will sort that. ( nearly all Hotels will have an English semi-speaker ).
As for picking-up etc,, LOL, the 28 and good looking won't hurt but its the dollars ( Pounds) that they find the most attractive.
Picking up anywhere in Thailand is similiar to the challenge of buying Coke at a seven eleven. So if your young and fit you find the coke fast and pay at check out,, if older maybe it takes 3 more minutes to find the coke and pay at check out,, if quite old and eyes dimming you take ten minutes to find the coke,, forget why you where there, see the coke in your hand jogging your memory and proceed to check out to pay.
If REALLY old, you enter seven eleven carried by a helpful Hotel worker, ask someone to help you find the coke,, shuffle to check out, nearly have a heart attack,, pay and get the help to carry you and the coke back to the hotel.
