Dream Hotel to awaken Bangkok this month
=================================

New York-based boutique Dream Hotel, is opening its first overseas branch this month on Sukhumvit Soi 15

The hotel is part of "Hautel Couture", an independent hotel group of luxury hotels worth an estimated $380 million. The Dream Hotel in Manhattan is its flagship.

The Bangkok hotel will boast 100 rooms, including 21 suites, all of which are eclectically decorated. It has a lounge with a cigar bar and even a few pet-friendly rooms for those who can't take a trip without Fifi.

The company bills the Dream Bangkok as "the funk of East meets West with look, feel and taste". And it was partially revealed for the first time in a recent Tata Young music video, said a hotel spokesman.

Dream is the brainchild of Vikram Chatwal, an actor and New York socialite who's been spied partying with the likes of Paris Hilton and dated Kate Moss. His lavish wedding a few months ago in India was attended by former US president Bill Clinton, steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and India's prime minister, Manmohan Singh.

The flashy hotel features indigo-blue corridors and rooms with plasma televisions, iPods, DVD players and WiFi connections along with special lighting that seeps out from under the bed.

Chatwal was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and raised in Montreal, London and New York. He has a finance degree from the Wharton School of Business and began his career as an analyst at Morgan Stanley in New York City.

He plans to open another Dream Hotel in London in the next two years.

Yes indeed, the Web site doesn't inspire much confidence.

The rooms at Dream in New York are very stylish and comfortable, but small. Prices are normal for NYC, which means expensive compared to anywhere else.

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 9 August 2006 :-

US hotel to expand operations in Thailand
===============================

Hampshire Hotels and Resorts plans to increase its number of hotel rooms and serviced apartments in Thailand to 2,000 by 2010.

The New York-based hotel group already operates the 100-room Dream Hautel Couture hotel - its first investment in Thailand and Asia - on Sukhumvit Soi 15 in Bangkok.

The firm's second property will be a serviced apartment, also on Sukhumvit Road.

Meanwhile, a hotel is to be built in Pattaya, while a resort will be opened in the southern part of the country.

The group has properties in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

A spokesperson said the increased investment in Thailand would serve international tourists looking for trendy and boutique-style hotels in the region.

The group plans to manage three different brand ideas: "Dream" - for boutique hotels and residences; "Night" - for barrack-style accommodation; and "Time" - for trendy hotels.

Dream Hautel Couture general manager Olivier Delangre, said his hotel aims to run an occupancy rate of 55 per cent in the first year of operation and will break even within three years.

"We are targeting tourists who prefer trendy and hip styles, particular those from Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan," said Delangre.

He said direct competitors were boutique hotels such as the Metropolitan on Sathorn Road and all five-star hotels on Sukhumvit Road.

Delangre said his property was formerly the Somerset Hotel, which was in business for 19 years. The group bought it three years ago and spent Bt2.8 billion on creating the Dream Hautel Couture.

If Wowser's "special rate of USD 129 + 10% service charge and 7% tax per night" is correct then the Manhattan and Dream are catering to entirely different markets.

October 2006 Manhattan prices for basic room are $28 for double occupancy (i.e., no hassle about joiner fees), including buffet breakfast for 2 and all taxes/service charges.

I'm sure the Dream will be much nicer than the Manhattan, which it should be at more than 4 times the price.

Isn't it nice that each of us gets to decide where to put our holiday money?

"Boutique" in the states is code word for very small room unless you are a dwarf, but Extremely HIP/Trendy bar-lobby. I have stayed at the Time, Paramount, and Hudson in NYC and the basic room is claustrauphobic.
