I'm tired of worrying over whether my girl for the evening might make off with my laptop, wallet or digital camera while I'm sleeping or passed out drunk. Room safes are too small for anything but a wallet and passport, and not all hotels have room safes (Nana Hotel, for example) - and I don't 100% trust that the desk clerks don't have spare keys for opening the hotel safe boxes. I've actually had money stolen from my room safe one time - and of course the hotel manager refused to believe my story. My solution? I recently bought a new Pelican case. The model 1650 is the same size and dimensions as a normal large-ish suitcase, with wheels and pull out handle. For those of you who don't know, Pelican is a maker of heavy-duty equipment cases that are water-proof, crush-proof and just about bomb-proof. It has two steel-reinforced tabs for padlocks, and thick steel-hinged handles on all four sides. In addition, I bought 3 medium size hardened steel 4-tumbler combination padlocks, and 4 feet of light-weight chain. I use two of the locks to lock the suitcase, and one lock to chain it to the luggage rack, dresser, or whatever is convenient to lock it to. All three locks are set with the same combination so I don't have to remember too many numbers. Now, when the girlie is taking her shower, I leave enough cash out to cover her fee, and the wallet, laptop, camera, mp3 player and cell phone get dumped into the suitcase and locked up tight - no more worries. Any time I leave the room to go out, the laptop and whatever else I'm not using gets locked up so I don't have to worry about the hotel staff, either. The case weighs maybe 16 or 18 pounds (~8kg) ; the locks and chain maybe another pound (~0.5kg). Big, black, and bad looking. It cost me US$200 - less money than I've spent on regular suitcases. You can call me paranoid if you want, but now I play safe and sleep better. Happy Punting, All.

Oh, one more detail: I lock the room safe (with nothing inside) just to add a layer of uncertainty to would-be thieves.

The only problem with your strategy is that someday you may encounter a really brazen thief who will steal your entire case because they assume there are some serious valuables inside. I always leave my luggage unlocked. One time when I locked my airline ticket inside my luggage, the hotel maid damaged the lock trying to get it open even though they never did (this was not in Thailand).

Is it paranormal paranoia when you think it's aliens out to get you? (Brother Wolf - are you still there?)

If you want to have some fun with the stewardes... errr... flight attendants, tell them, (loudly enough so that everyone around can get in on the fun) : "This here airplane might not be bomb-proof, but this dang luggage sure is - ha ha ha..." Always good for a laugh.
