If you're on an expense account or have the dough, the below were guest friendly high end hotels (as of August 2002). Note that I am only listing those hotels I've actually used or know from friends and contacts as having certain guest policies. Hope the below helps.
- JW Marriott (on Sukhumvit NOT Marriott Riverside which is not guest friendly)
- Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit
- Banyan Tree (Formerly the Westin)
- Pan Pacific
- Le Meridian President
Not so friendly high end guest policies (some are erratic in terms when they let in guests and when not) :
- Regent (for 200plus bucks a nite, you would think that the guest was "King"....)
- Dusit Thani (starting to crack down as of April 02)
- Sukothai
- The Oriental (a DEFINITE NO as this prissy hotel thinks it's on a level of it's own - NOT!)
- Shangri-La Riverside
- The Penninsula
- The Intercontinental Siam Square (inconsistent but a lot of cute Asian airline stewardesses stay here...)
- Grande Hyatt Erawan (this one is a big "depends" as I've had negative experiences there (twice), but friends say otherwise).
- Plaza Athene (have heard that this one has an inconsistent guest policy as well)
Guest Friendly Mid-Range:
- Landmark
- Novotel
- Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza
- Amari Watergate
- Westin Grande Sukhumvit
- Evergreen Laurel

For the money, location, and lack of hassel Regency Park on Soi 22 is hard to beat. Can get a room for about 1100B a night if you walk up to the desk. Good value for money. Of course if you on an expense account, the Oriental is very nice.

Have not found the Amari Watergate to be particularly guest friendly. An associate and I stayed there in Feb/Mar 2002 while on business and they hassled him about bringing in a Thai lady friend during the middle of the day for coffee and chit chat in his room. She was not a BG (I know this for a fact) and she was dressed like any Thai lady. Needless to say, we raised holy hell with the management. I will not stay there again.

Novotel Lotus on Sukhumvit Soi 33(?) is guest-friendly but Novotel Siam Square is not (was told B600 joiner fee will be charged though I booked a double room).
Sofitel Silom in Silom is also guest-friendly.

The Dusit Thani has been guest unfriendly a lot longer than this year. They intercept Thai ladies at the door, even non-BGs. I saw them once intercept a non-Thai Asian woman who happened to be a registered guest along with her farang husband. Assholes.
The Oriental is just as bad in this regard.

Ambassador: musty, old, and often crowded with cheap group tours from India and mainland China. The fire earlier this year didn't help; rumor is that Dr Charoen of Mekong and Chang/Carlburg fame (not to mention the Queens Park Hotel) is going to buy it to tear it down and build a new hotel.
Long overdue, says I.
NOT recommended. You can do a lot better for 1000 a night along Sukhumvit. I'd rate the Nana Hotel as much superior to the Ambassador. And no question about the Nana being guest friendly! One time I had 3 girls overnight and only extra I paid was for the extra breakfast buffets.

DITTO on the Dusit's shitty attitude. Get this, my former Thai GF from UK was hassled and she was the paying (her credit card), registered guest! One time they referred to me as her customer and gave her difficulties when she came back to the room alone.
Sorry, off thread briefly,CJE have you heard the story about the alleged source of the original seed money for Ambassador? No, I won't discuss it publicly- but good stuff.
