Hi chaps,

For those that follow my posts, I will be coming to Los on holiday in december time, i'm scrapping my original plan to come and look for work and stay long term.

Although I will be obtaining a tourist visa, and travelling one way, staying anything up to 8 weeks.

I intend to book the first 10 days of my trip, and also book the new year time to secure it, as I wouldn't want to take any chances with that.

However the period in between and after I am leaving open. To clarify this period is most likley to be the middle 2 weeks in december, and first three weeks (excluding new year) of January.

Their are two scenario's, the first will be book online, while i'm in Thailand, from an internet cafe etc

The second would to walk in. Which I am already aware encourages a higher rate.

Based on previous posts it's my understanding that some people like to book their whole itinerary for peace of mind, given that it is high season.

We have chosen not to do this, so please consider this when offering advice on this post.

Other than being subject to a higher rate, based on walk-in, and no assurance that all of the places we stay will be guest friendly.....

Can anyone offer advice about this

I think our main concern is not having anywhere to stay

Planning to see all of Los including places like Koh Tao and the Phi Phi Islands

I'm assuming for places like BKK, Phuket,Pattaya, that there will always be somewhere to stay even in high season.

I'm not so sure about the islands like Koh Tao, Phi Phi

Could we turn up in places like this and find somewhere resonable to stay???

What about last minute bookings online before we turned up, would they be all booked??

I can appreachiate that we might not have the choice of being picky, that is not such a problem.

Just need to get an understanding of a trip like these, of what my priorites need to be

Thanks Guys

BD5,I have travelled to most of Thailand,at high and low season over the last 20 years, and it has been my experience that (1) If you travel light you can use public buses which, except to the most remote places, provide a reasonably frequent service (commonly anything from 3 to 7 buses daily starting from as early as 5 AM to as late as 10PM),but you will need to have the latest Lonely Planet travel guide as times and bus station locations can and do change.A small hand bag that can fit in the overhead luggage racks is better than a back pack which usually cannot. However, other than on VIP or special tourist buses which have fewer seats, leg room is restricted. This suits smaller Thais, but if you are tall and/or have knee problems, you will have difficulty staying comfortable, especially on long trips in which case you might be better off using the trains.Trains allow you to walk around, have more room for luggage, but are usually slower, less frequent, and more expensive although still cheap when compared with the cost in Europe,USA,or Australia. But there are many more remote places served by buses than trains, and at the time you are travelling,it would be wise to book ahead, especially when using the trains.Except during holiday periods it is usually possible to get a seat on a bus at the time you want to board, but to avoid delays (and to secure a better seat) you should always buy your ticket at the earliest time. This can be inconvenient as bus stations are often located some distance away from the town centre. If you want to travel away from Bangkok at new year, whether by bus or train you must book well ahead(even 2 weeks might not be long enough to some locations).(2) During high season hotels in Pattaya,Phuket,Krabi,Hua Hin,Cha-am(on Weekends),Chiang Mai,and Ko Samui are about 50% more expensive than in low season. Not surprisingly cheaper, midrate, and all the best deals are snapped up first leaving those who dont book ahead with the more/most expensive or decidedly unattractive hotels.Outside of the heavily touristed places there is little or no difference between high and low season hotel tariffs, and there is probably no need to book ahead, although the best deals may then be missed. To avoid the worst hotels consult Lonely Planet. If you want to stay at the best hotels, whether or not in heavily touristed places, you will almost always get a lower rate over the internet than if you just walk in.Outside Bangkok Asia Rooms and R24(especially in North Eastern Thailand) offer the widest choice of hotels, but Asia Rooms give a better exchange rate which needs to be factored in when R24`s offered rate is only a little lower than that of Asia Rooms.Booking ahead also avoids a lot of walking carrying your luggage which can happen if you arrive late because of an unexpected transport delay.(3) Lonely Planet will also help you to find the best restaurants, and avoid the worst,in out of the way places.(4) You will usually get a better rate of exchange in Bangkok, Pattaya,or Phuket than more remote towns, where if you arrve out of bank hours your hotel may be the only place of exchange,at a very unfavourable rate.

By way of an addendum to my last post5) I have never had to pay a joiner`s fee even though I booked only a single at the best or near best hotels in Nakhon Ratchasima(Khorat),Khon Kaen,Udon Thani,Ubon Ratchathani,Phitsanulok,Roi Et,Chiang Rai,Chiang Mai, Krabi and Nakhon Si Thammarat.A safe rule of thumb is that you are unlikely to have any problems if the hotel has an in house or attached massage shop.In Pattaya,Phuket, and Hat Yai you are unlikely to have any problems regardless of your hotel selection, but I would avoid guest houses if you want to have "guests".You should also probably avoid Hat Yai,and Southern Thailand(other than Phuket) so long as the current insurgency lasts.

Thanks Valetta really helpful stuff here.

So am I right in saying that there is always an oppotunity to find accomodtion in high season (excluding new year), but it will be subject to a higher price, and u won't get to be very choosy the longer you leave.

I think my main concern is ending up in a situation where everywhere is booked, in one of the islands or something.

But I guess we are just gonna have to be very pro active as it's the high season

BD,the islands are the one gap in my Thai experience. However,I think you would always be able to find accommodation,at least in the larger resorts, but it could be much more expensive than if you had internet booked ahead.

Gentlemen: IMO better'n 1/2 the hotels in Phuket won't let a girl in without a joiner fee, especially high season. There's a list of girl-friendly joints on this Phuket Forum somewhere: http://www.phuket-info.com/forums/. Try their search function. Good Luck: wj
