My apologies for starting a new thread if this has been discussed. I am coming to Bangkok in June and need a hotel for 3 weeks. Which reservation site is the best to use? Also, has anyone had any problems paying in advance with a credit card and being ripped off? Normally I stay at 4-5 star place in the lower Suk area. Given the economic times I am assuming I will be able to get some pretty reasonable rates. Am I better off using these booking sites or directly with the hotels. Landmark has given me a pretty good deal but wondering if I can do better at JW or somewhere down near Cowboy. Any and all information appreciated.

Auto: I've been looking for June and I'm afraid you're going to have to sniff around a bit. There's a link for Hotels Combined on this site (probably the best), Agoda is cheaper for some places, Expedia sometimes is, and board member Tim has the best deals on many properties (thaihoteldiscounts.com). People are raving about the new Park Plaza and there's stupid good deals on the Grand Sukhumvit right now. wj

Booking through http://agoda.com/ via this site would be most appreciated. However, you are free to choose where you want to book your hotels. Yes, Tim's rates are unbeatable. Do note that agoda.com has a lowest rate policy, that means if you find a cheaper rate elsewhere within 48 hours of your booking, you can tell them about it, and they will return the difference to you. My friend tried it and he got it refunded to his credit card.

I've used http://www.agoda.com/ and http://www.asiarooms.com/ with absolutely no problems either with credit cards or with the hotels booked at. I'll probably give Saucy Tim's http://www.thaihoteldiscounts.com/ a try next time, as he seems to have a very good reputation on this forum and also has some deals on some places I'd like to try. I'd recommend looking at numerous web sites to see what their best deals are. Occasionally, the best deal might be directly with the hotel.

Good start so far. The Grand Sukhumvit you refer to, is this the Sheraton Grande? Guess I will do a search. I did quickly look at Agoda, maybe I will take a second look. But if I do decide to book with them, does anyone have any mixups or horror stories with their reservations?

Sorry BK: I misremembered and thought the site made the $ on Hotels Combined, I forgot it was Doc. Agoda used to be on HC and they were the cheapest 70% of the time. They do charge a little fee (like Expedia), so sometimes you can beat them direct from the hotel. Auto: the GS used to be a Sofitel. Now it's owned by Accor. wj

I can thoroughly recomend Tim and his Hotel reservation service. I recently had a week in Bkk and Tim was able to confirm reservations on the same day, and at best prices. This was the first time I used his service. I would not hesitate to recomend or use Tim in future, he also possesses a wealth of knowledge and can assist in answering any query you may have about hotels and accomm in Bkk. I haven't used Tim for bookings outside Bkk, so I can only assume his service and knowledge extend beyond Bkk, anyone with further experience with Tim may comment here further.

Quote: from quack quack on 10:53 am on April 21, 2009 Doesn't Agoda exclude taxes etc. when stating rates via their site? To the best of my knowledge it does, please correct me if I'm wrong. If Agoda excludes taxes & other sites include these, when stating rates, it's an apples vs onions comparison sort of.
You are right, their prices are before tax. What you need to compare is the price that you have to pay at Agoda (just click on the BOOK button when get the rates, to see the detailed charges), and the prices on other websites that advertise their rates including taxes and service charge.
