First time at this 5*, I'll be back. Thanks to SaucyTim I got a 5k rate, all in, including break (670bht. if you pay). Yeah, Internet is not included, but they have a weekly rate of 2350 so less than 400/day, and wireless too, so Poolside is on.
I'm SPG Gold, was upgraded at the desk to upper floor, inc. pressing, butler service (coffee/tee), 20% all food. Haven't checked out the lounge food, I'm eating one great breakfast each morning, usually a leisurely 2 hours while reading the IHT (included), then I skip the day food, it's too frickin' hot to eat anyway, then I go for a 8-10 dinner. The buffet here is a bit under the JWM, but close. I did go with a friend to the buffett at InterCont, that's pretty damn good, esp. since he had a Gold Card so we got 2 for 1 pricing. Last night I ate here at the Italian place, excellent. Best wine of the trip as well, 500 bht ave prices but a good 5 oz plus pour, unlike all the other places on this trip where the wrist was quick to stop. Selection was better than any other place as well, especially the 2004 Cygnus IGT.
Okay, back to the SGS. I really liked the location and access to BTS/MRT, puts it immediately in top position.
Gym was good, not anywhere near JWM but much better than Conrad/Westin/LeMeriden/etc. Good spa features, Sauna and Steam were clean and well done. Pool side is great, pools a little small, can't really do laps.
Very good staff at all points of hotel.
Easy access on ground floor for shy or discreet guest (re:Walk of Shame). Didn't go to the club downstairs, but jazz on 2nd floor was nice respite.
SO, it's worth a visit, especially with the price migration of 4* up into the near $100 range and the JW @ $180 plusplusplus, this seems a good value.
BUT, after I booked I saw the Dusit Thani available for well under $100, and it too has direct access to BTS. Don't know about it otherwise, so, I'll go there this evening to case the joint, maybe it's "next time"

Jimmy, I personally think SGS is a par above The Dusit, the latter feels a little older and worn, although the staff service is excellent and friendly. Its also a (Allbeit small) walk to the BTS, SGS is closer.

Nice to hear that Jimmy.

Yes we have the Dusit for around 2835 Baht per night inc ABF. However, Ths Sgs is in a different league and the Dusit's rooms are showing their age.

Right guys,
just back from a reconnoiter on Dusit Thani, and not gonna go there. I liked the wide selection of resto's, and it would be nice to have the couple thousand baht in the pocket regarding the differential on rates. But there's too wide a gap in the items you mention, plus the rooms seemed small, and it's definitely more of a walk than SGS to get BTS. However, in it's favor the MRT seemed very convenient.
Personally I much prefer the Suk to Silom. SO, the DT was worth a look, but if I'm to go over to that side I'd walk a little further to Le Meridien, and that would no doubt lead me to give SOL another chance....maybe.

Try the Sunday Brunch, but only if you're really hungry.

I'll presume you've done the rounds and find Dusit's brunch the best of the lot?
What's the cost? Is it packed with middle-aged chinese thai women elbowing each other out of the way for the Pekin Duck? Is there a foie station that requires defending your place in line? I'm a veteran of these wars.
Do they free-flow and how much?
I'm usually only in for one Sunday, so I'll give it a try on your recco's.

I can't speak for Baquawn, but I was referring to the Sunday Brunch at the Sheraton. I think it runs about 1200 or so, but includes drinks, and a massive desert bar. The easy listening piano background music helps the digestion.

I had my first stay at the SGS last weekend making the most of their BHT3200 a night offer. Now that I have stayed there I might even be tempted to stay again at full price. The rooms are excellent even the basic room I was in was a decent size. The staff are all very friendly. God buffet breakfast although on the Sunday morning the egg chief was getting over loaded with requests and you had to stand in front of him and make sure he did your order.

I spent one night in the nightclub BarSu on the ground floor. It is expensive but I really enjoyed myself the staff there were very friendly, there was good music and after about 10pm the place has a number of hot FLs sitting around looking for business.
