Anyone stay there, or do any walk through's ? It's only 75 rooms, but all suites and very high rack rates. WOTIF has it in the 4600 bht range, inc brk/lun/wifi. I wonder if it's target market is the med tourists from the Mid-East.

Back on topic. I'm locked and loaded and I'll provide a report as I experience the place. I'm put off a bit by the "others" as well, but less so than if I were checking in to a 2* hotel with a hoard of budget travelers in the lobby and elevators from China/Korea/France/Poland/Brazil/or wherever. It's a big world with lots of people in it. And people are people. I spend hours before each trip on airline booking and hotel. It's an addiction, trying to sit upfront on the plane, and in a good 5* hotel for what I pay for a 2-3* here in the states. I went with SaucyTim for the booking. Unless you can find a WOTIF mystery rate for the particular hotel you want I don't think you can do better than Tim, and he's a forum contributor as well. Good to support those who keep BKKTonite an active forum. He might even be able to match a mystery price on WOTIF....

I'm a couple days into it now, so feel like I have a fair handle on the place. First, it's a 4*, well below Renaisannce, just below Pullman, and above Park Plaza. Rooms are huge, but fit and finish is "thai style". I like the Porch for breakfast. Great views, it's a small, simple, but well done buffett with egg station. The gym is minimal, I can use it for a few days but it's quite lacking. Pool is quite nice, a 25 yarder on the 8th floor with a nice sitting area. Staff are pleasant, some need training on guest service more than others. The staff at the Porch is particuarly in need of a tune up. On a side note I went to the IC for the buffett. A few trips ago I thought it had surpassed the JWM Cafe(which I thought had declined precipitously) and I was looking for a good dinner. It too is slipping. Still good, but... I'm concluding a few things on this trip. The economy is squeezing margins and it's reflected in price/value everywhere. I had a tough time finding a 5* in the $100 range, on this trip only Le Meridien was close, and it would have been $135-150 "all in" (brk/wifi). Last year it was easy to have choices. Two years ago I was at SGS for $100, on the Club floor. The world is getting flatter.

Getting ready to check out, so here's my closing statement (requiem?) With all the choices of true 5* hotels, and Sivatel joining the plethora of 4* purporting to be 5*, this place shows how difficult it is to make that grade. First, strictly speaking, having someone sit at a front desk by the door doesn't make them a Concierge. Second, an expansive room is not the same as a well appointed one. Third, an ambitious menu can be undone by service staff no matter how well the kitchen performs. I really enjoyed the simple but well done breakfast buffet... but what does it take to get a cup of coffee? Finally, some clues of true 5* status are answering every/any phone call in 3 rings, or 24 hr room service but my key ones are; Can you get the newspaper you want (within reason) and, when you look in the bathroom is there a toilet gleaming at you, or is it tucked into a W/C or at least discreetly walled off. Sivatel does have 24 hr room service, but misses on all the others. BTW, one of my initial questions regarding this hotel was whether it was targeting Middle Easterners, I speculated it may be since it was on the "odd" side of Suk and the map showed it very close to Bumrungrad Hostpital. Well, it's quite a ways from the "Arab quarter", separated by the toll road. It's actually sited directly across from the British embassy on Wireless. It was quite quiet. All the facilities were under utilized, over staffed, and it leaves one wondering how long before they have to get more competitive.
