From experience, avoid th Liberty, which is a dump full of lowlife criminals. The Elizabeth is probably the best in the area although all I ever did was eat there at 3 AM with well known Bangkok casino owner and "influential figure", now Senator, Chat Tao Poon and his retinue.

As CJE will probably inform you in detail (I'm just trying to steal his thunder!) the numerous casinos in Thailand are illegal, for the time being. (That will change if all the mafioso in and out of government have their way.)

There are nine major casinos in Bangkok and hundreds of small ones, all illegal. You can tell the major places because they are all guarded by off duty police. Gambling used to be one of the four royal monopolies of vice, that were auctioned off periodically to highest bidder. The others were opium, alcohol and tobacco. After WWII (or maybe before) it was deemed to be unseemly to be officially in the opium business, so that one was dropped, although opium dens were still around in Sampeng (Chinatown) for a few more decades and even after that they were just converted to brothels. I'm not sure when the same fate befell gambling, but the official gambling dens were immediately replaced by semi-underground ones. So, the present push for legalizing casinos is simply a reversion to former times. I doubt it will happen, as the people who own the illegal casinos (which are almost never raided) and also most of the crossborder ones, in Poipet and Koh Kong etc., have an awful lot of clout. As far as I know westerners are not welcome. The owner of the two largest casinos is my pal, but I have never been inside one of his places, just his house. Anyway I am not a gambler.

PS, the tobacco and liquor monopolies are still with us. The liquor monopoly was supposed to be done away with two years ago, but, don't hold your breath. Good old Dr.Charoen's grip is very strong, and he has a very very deep pocket.

BTW Mr Joe seems to be arguing that the gambling bosses want legalization while I am arguing the opposite. Both of us are right, and both wrong. There is no consensus. The push for a casino to be legally established in Pattaya is a move by Chonburi "influential figure" Kamnan Poh, but he is not in good graces with the present regime and so I doubt that his initiative will fly. On the other hand both Snoh T. and Wattana A. are heavy investors in casinos in Poipet, which would dry up and blow away if casinos were legalized in the Kingdom. Both of those worthies have a lot more clout than does the Kamnan. Luang (Uncle) Chat (Tao Poon) on the other hand is a vocal proponent of legalization, and as a Senator may be able to do something about it. He is also a major real estate operator (Tao Poon Mansion etc) and publisher of the Siam Rath newspaper, and was a protege of the late great Mom Kukrit Pramoj. And used to be a major Thai pop singer. I've seen the gold records in his house.

Nicely done. I was trying to figure out how to simpl explain that apparent contradiction and you did it quite nicely. BTW as usual, I agree with your take on things. Though I would add that Kamnan Poh (quite the character, as is his son who I had a tiny bit of contact with.) is almost certainly not as powerful as Snoh I still have hope that Snoh and his ilk will gradually fade away.
