I always try and travel in the off season. I find the lowest price the hotel offers. I check the hotel website, various discounters and in the USA, I call the 800#. Once I find the cheapest rate, I email the hotel manager and only the manager as he has the authority to cut prices. I wait until 5-7 days before I leave to send my emails. I give my flight # and I ussally am a long stay guest ie: 10-14 days. If the hotel lowest price is $100.USD, I will offer around $40.USD many times they will come back with a $50.USD and I'll take it. I always make sure the price includes American breakfast and all taxes. I usally send 7-10 emails to different hotels at the same time and I've never been turnded down yet. When I go to Pattaya I don't stay at high priced hotels so I don't go thru all this.

Cape Town Interconti: $50.USD
Westin Bangkok $59.USD

BigDUSA: When you make your offer to these 5 Star hotels, do you mention anything about their "guest friend policy"? Do you mentioned the American breakfast and all taxes in your offer or do that after getting a satisfactory price from the manager? Have you ever made offers on the JW Marriott or the Landmark? Thanks.

I always book a double and never had a problem with guests. In my emails, I always mention, ABF, taxes. I paid $50USD at the Siam Interconti and was turned down by the Landmark. I never tried Marriott in BKK but in Pattaya when I went with my 13 y/o daughter last January I stayed at the Marriott for $66USD this didn't include ABF. Traveling with my daughter I had different requirements as far as the hotel went. Out of the 7-10 emails I have always found at least one that would wheel and deal. Remember the trick is that I travel during the slow season. All most impossible during the high season by email.

I did that last year in Atlantic City during the Labor day weekend. Just called the manager and got a good deal. Hotel was officially booked full but there were some cancellations.
I like Bid D's idea, will have to try that for another trip.

I spent quite a few years working at 5 stars in US and LOS and I can verify BigDUSA's method is effective. At most hotels it is official (but unpublicized) policy to allow some negotiation below the "rack rate" (posted prices). It basically depends on how saavy you are; When most managers comes up against someone as sharp as BigDUSA, they will graciously submit.

BIGD i like your approach towards the hotels, very nice way. Basically we all know that the rack rates are just an indictaion. recently i got surprised by a friend of mine staying in the sukhothai hotel for usd 69++ a night where the rack rate is about usd 170!
I can confirm the rate for the siam interconti hotel it is probably the bestdeal in town right now!
for your information the westin is closed and renamed to the banyan tree. this hotel has gone upmarket so i doubt you will get the mentioned usd 65 there at the moment!

Siam Intercontinetal is closed and being torn down to make way for another mall. I liked this hotel excellent service at a reasonable price.

How do you find out the Hotel Manager's name? Do you just send them an email and tell them your offer or do you use some other reasons.
Interesting concept, just like price line except do it yourself.

Some websites give you managers email address or I will call the hotel and find out the manager name or email the manager. Remember I travel during the off season and I am a long stay guest. Internet makes this alot easier then mailing letters.

got a mate 4,100 bt a night at the Emporium Suites last week, which to my mind makes marritott/landmark look basic, this incl. breakfast, plus would got a better deal if stayed longer. Also mid class ambassador, quote 2000bt for tower wing, but will do weekly rate of 7,700bt, which allowing for huge rooms, plus the location, is pretty good.
