on security issues...

has anyone come across news on break ins and all their belongings gone through and stolen?

friends of mine were in BKK before and some person/people tried to break into their room while they were in it.

can't confirm the place though.

I've been to  BKK around 14 times within the last 4 years. I've never heard about or experienced anyone having their things taken from the hotel or apartment.

I would have to question though, where did your friends stay?? I have found BKK to be very safe, especially the rooms.

But ..... that does not mean that it can't happen. I just think that you should not worry about it and worry more about trying to cross the street without getting hit!! ha ha ha ha!!

The only time..I came across that my belonging had been disturbed was my bottle of JB whisky. I was about to enter my room I saw the rood maid trumpetting my bottle of JB. Afterward (after she left) I realise she added some water to it to maintain the level. I  brought the JB down to the reception and tell them what I want to do with the whisky and what happened. I said. I want to give it to the room maid who just did my bed! Few miunutes later, the manager came to plead with me not to make an official complain and not to het ger dismissed. I told them not to worry but asked her to continue drinking with my blessing. Guv them a chance.

Amari City Lodge Soi 18: Inside burglary jobs at this place, one of my friends lost $7500 worth of notebook PCs and silver (latter bought at Chatuchak). No sign of forced entry. Police investigation botched. Front desk turned off room phone as soon as theft reported.

The place isn't really part of the Amari group, it is South Asian (Indian) owned and staffed, and the thieves are likely of same origin.

Casanova,

Guess she was not the best looking maid, would have been a nice bribe opertunity, LOL.

I have never had any problems with people going trough my belongings or even going away with them. Hotels in Thailand 3-4 star and up, very unlikely IMHO.

Guesthouses could be a different story, but no experience from my side and I intend to keep it like that.

Insider Job?

I always keep my essential belongings in the Safe so when the TG leaves my room in the morning and I am still far off in wonderland, there is little to take allong. In 15 years of fun I have never hd a problem with one exception and this was in germany:

an Escort girl (not Thai) to my shoes just for the hell of it as a prank. I had to wear my trainers with my suit untill I got to somewhere to buy a new pair of shoes. TI guess she was only mischievous. Shoes in Safe from that time on........

I've been to Thailand about 25 times over the years and have never had anything disturbed. I have on occaision left money out as a tip for the room maid and that was even left alone.
I do however, out of prudent behavior, place all of the valuable items, cash etc into the room safe.

Never had a problem, usually leave important things in the safe (room or reception). As mentioned above, left a tip for the maid and that was left alone too, ended up giving it to her directly when I saw her.

I have to clarify something in my post.

I've heard about possible inside jobs within the hotel, like Sauron pointed out.  I personally have never experienced any theft, either in the room or on the street.

But ... I've never heard about someone trying to break into the room while the occupants were there. That to me sounds very extreme.

And .. that is why I commented on where your friends had stayed.

I have never had any problems. I did not even use the safe in my room. Even when I brought the TG's to the room nothing was taken. I had a lap top, pda, digital camera, credit cards, cash and wallet. I just locked the extra cash and credit card in the suitcase.
Thai's are honest people. I am sure there are bad ones out there too just like every where else.
