This comment ^ and being a few days away from being back has me thinking about finding a decent taxi driver. Nothing ticked me off more (well actually it, was the only thing that ticked me off) than coming out of my hotel and getting taken for a 20 min twirl by a taxi knowing full well we coulda been there in 8.
So I'm just wondering if you epxat residents have some favorite taxi's that you call when you know you'll need one. Or do you just take your chances? I was handed several cards by a few guys who I liked enough to want to reward them via repeat business. Does anyone practice this approach?

Particular taxi's is too complicated......they could be anywhere in BKK stuck in traffic so to call on the spot doesn't really work. I have one rule....never go with any taxi who is sitting waiting waiting for farangs......Always walk along or wait for a moving driver who is out looking for honest business......simple rule and I've never been taken for a ride.....speaking Thai obviously helps in this as well....they tend to know not to mess if you can speak Thai...but even with a few words you can fool them into thinking you know where you are going (if you don't)

I only know a few words, (in Thai) right, left and my numbers quite well. It is enough though to not get ripped off by a cab driver (so far). First thing you need to do when getting in a cab is to make sure that the driver turns on the meter, if he refuses, get out and find another one.

I'm not trying to be a BigOne here....but do other members have much trouble with meter refusal....I've only ever had it once in all my time here...and that was at Patpong recently......and they were doing it to EVERYBODY...Thais and all....

I have had it a few times and just get out, except for one time, I was wasted and with 2 BG's, did not notice that the meter was off until we were on the motorway, can't really get out there so I argued with the driver who pretended to not speak english, he won the argument (and 250B for a short drive) as I had other things on my mind.

like others what I do is tell him about the meter as soon as I get in the cab. This way he knows that I am not a newbie.

Now never. Not once in the last 2 year has a taxi driver refused. I havent even had to ask them to turn it on. But 5 years ago things were different. Yes, they were reluctant sometimes. Not anymore.

ccvvbb you're making me laugh (unintentionally of course) because my worst offender there was so shrewd he managed to keep the cab moving so that I couldn't even jump out, and trust me, the ride was long enough and repetitive enough that I was seriously considering it (for quite some time too).
Worst part was he was hailed by my hotel doorman and told where to go. And sure, he had the meter on, why not, when you're gonna milk it for all it's worth. There ended up being 60 baht on the meter and he asked for 40 (only words he spoke too). Naturally I gave it with a bit o' stink eye.

I echo Yurune's first post 100%. I've had some great drivers but unless I have a special trip (long distance) planned well in advance I don't bother calling anyone.
I just follow the rule Yurune follows; skip the line and go to the one that's moving.
