I will be traveling to BK in late December 2002. Of the following two hotels, which is better:

Ambassador    or    Federal

Any information that can ge given would be great.

I favour the Federal, mainly because I like a smaller, quieter place.  In terms of location there's nothing to chose between the two except for the extra 100 metres up Soi 11 from the Fed to Sukhumvit.  I paid B960 at the Fed last week.  Absolutely no hassles with the ladies there.  They don't have a website but you can book online at federalhotel@hotmail.com.

mlay,

If you mean I'm wrong about the price, I always book direct with the Federal and the price excludes breakfast, which is B100 for American and about B60 for Continental.  I've stayed there many times over the past 15 years and never had any problems with bringing girls back (many times with 2 girls) and never been charged extra.  The internet booking prices are very often different from the direct booking rates - sometimes lower, sometimes higher depending on the hotel it seems.  I prefer always to book direct.  IMHO if you want a quiet, laid back place then the Fed is difficult to beat - OK it may not be the cheapest but the staff are great and the location is good.

Just back from my vacation in Bangkok. Listened to the advice on the forum about hotels and stated at the Federal. The hotel is at the end of Soi 11 past the Ambassador and President Apartments on the left side of the road. This is a 15 minute walk from NEP or 5 minute from Clinton Plaza. To get to Soi Cowboy you can walk for 30 minutes, take a taxi or Tuk-Tuk for 5 minute ride or catch the BTS for 10 ride and walk combo (BTS open til 2400) I made reservations through their web site (26 Dec 02 - 29 Dec 02 and 3 Jan 03 - 5 Jan03) email adderss which I had to confirm with a credit card. Paid 1000 Bt each night. First night was charged to my credit card before I got there because it was the High Season. Check in went very smooth, staff very friendly. Hotel has three floors. I was put on the second floor. I reccomend the second or third floor after staying there. All floors are quite but the first floor has half of its rooms facing a wall to the back of the hotel. People can reach these rooms without passing the desk or person they have watching the front of the hotel. To reach the second and third floor you have to pass someone sitting at a desk leading up from either of the two stair wells leading to the second and third floor. The hotel is very guest friendly. I enternained one or two different guests a day and nothing was said. The first room I stayed in had two twin beds. I just pushed them together when I needed more room and the second had a queen size. The bathroom has a nice size tub. It held me (6' 200lbs) and two of my guest (5'2 110lbs & 5'4 100lbs) at the same time for a little fun. Don't worry about splashing water the floor is tiled. Ask for extra towles and tolit tissue before you entertain, the hotel only gives the basics. Purchase extra stuff (comb, tooth brush, tooth paste) for your guest or make sure they bring it with them, the hotel does not provide. Be VERY, VERY carful with the water in the shower it was extremly hot and difficult to adjust. The blankets are very thin and AC very cool so you may have to request more blankets if you have guests. They do have a on site mini store that will sell these items but it closes at 8pm daily and is closed on Sunday. They offer a complementry contentinal breakfast, you have to check at the reception desk and get your ticked everyday BEFORE ordering your meal. If anyone has any specific question let me know. Overall good experience with this hotel. Rooms on same par a Nana or Dynisty Inn. I I stayed at Nana in July 02 and check out the Dynisty Inn to be closer to the action. No Luck. Next post will be about the Pattay Garden Hotel. Bad experience.
