Just a little info. for anyone needing a hotel for a little action in the MP area.
Last week I was travelling with a Thai guy who was on a limited budget.
We needed a low price hotel for a couple of nights in the Ratchadapisek area. The Thai guy booked us into the 13 Coins Tower. It is in the soi opposite Poseidon.
Check in is a little strange. It is on the second floor and you actually check in at the restaurant desk.
For 600 baht per night it was very good value. The rooms are adequately large and clean.
The restaurant was very good, and had both Thai and western food.
It must be guest friendly since you enter the place from the car park. You can take the lift directly to your floor. I saw no security people at all.
So anybody wanting a hotel in that area, at that price, it is OK.

Nice info. Even if one usually stays in the Sukhumwit area, one can shift here for a couple of days of action in the MP's on Ratchadpisek

I've also heard good things about the 13 Coins accomodation, but Ihaven't stayed there.
I will give a pretty strong recommendation for their restaurants though. The prices are rather low, the food -- both Western and Thai -- is quite good and the service is consistently quite good also. The owner is pretty switched on and brought back a lot of good ideas from his years working in the US. They used to have branches all over Thailand but the owner did badly in the 97 crash and they closed some. Anyway if you see any, they are always a good bet for a meal.

Wow. When they still had a 13 Coins in Hua Mark area my former business partner used to order stuff in from there (he lived on Ram' Soi 65 at the time and so did we.)
My recollection of their western food was that it was cardboared and of their Thai food was that it was indifferent at best...but maybe I am spoiled by my wife's Thai cooking, and maybe the problem with the farang menu was unique to that (defunct) location?
I am talking 10 years ago, and it went belly up c.6 years ago.
Personal to MrJoe: Isn't it refreshing to be able to disagree once in a while about something? ANYthing?

My wife just reminded me she got a case of the Aztec trots from there once, and we were joking that, if they are 13 on the Coins scale, she's a solid 30 Coins...

Obviously it&'
s a matter of opinion but as I said I always enjoyed 13 Coins. I used to go to the one in Pattaya frequently for years and the one in Lad Prao. Never got sick, always had pretty decent meals and the Thai girls were always pretty pleased with the Thai food they had (I'm talking about TGs I knew well enough that they would not be too kreng jai to tell me if they weren't.) I went to other ones on occasion and again had no complaints. As I said, I was partivcularly pleased with the fact that they had good service and actually had trained staff to achieve a consistent standard.
On the other hand, I haven't eaten there since I became addicted to my own wife's excellent cooking. (She has not achieved the reknown of Mrs. Sauron but she is well known amongst all that know her for her culinary skills with Thai or falang grub -- but she cooks almost exclusively Falang food for me.)
Anyway what am I rambling about? I liked 13 Coins. Others may not. I hereby withdraw myself for any consideration as Restaraunt Critic of BKK2Nite.
