I don't want to sound like a snob but when I go to Thailand I like to relax and stay at reasonably nice hotels. I know that the lower end hotels are guest friendly but some are shitholes and I am amazed that people can enjoy there time there. I have a couple of questions on 4 to 5 star hotels and their guest policy:

I have read that to prevent being charged the guest fee that one should rent a double room. Does this require giving a name for the "second" party at the time of registration? If you do give fictitious girl name does the hotel then check and compare when you do show up with a TG? Does the booking of a double room allow you to change guests or are you going to be stuck with the first TG you bring in and register?

I stayed at the Novotel Siam (above the CM2 disco) and the number of security guards blocking guest access was overwhelming!

Why do hotels insist on playing these guest rule games when they know that P4P tourism is one of the prime reasons for male visits to LOS?

What have the forum members found to be the general attitude of the higher end hotels towards guests? In general do they want to discourage TG guests?

Does anyone have any good guest experiences with 4 to 5 star Phuket hotel/resorts?

Thanks for the help.

Whenever I was BKK for Cobra Gold, and the Army was paying my perdiem, I always stayed at the Monarch Lee Garden (Now Sofitel Silom) -

It is located on Silom about a 5-10 minute walk to Patpong (just walk out of the hotel, turn left and walk down Silom to Patpong). It is rated 4 *'s and has excellent service, rooms, etc. and am excellent all-you-can-eat buffet on the 2nd floor. I took TG's there every night I stayed and was never hassled, never asked girl for ID, never asked for a "joiner fee". Rooms are good sized, excellent view, decent location, bathtub and glass-enclosed shower (free show), in-room safe. Rooms are about $60.
Many fond memories of the Monarch Lee - but the best was while there for the Army Reserves for Cobra Gold, I had reeived a job offer prior to going and got it confirmed while in Thailand. My old boss was a witch and I was trying to figure out how best to announce my departure. I had no vacation time coming, nothing else to lose....so my decsion was to send a FAX the day before I was supposed to return to work informing her that I had quit. Business office at the hotel was very accomodating, sent the FAX and provided me with the receipt confirmation.

Only problem I had was some taxi drivers didn't know where this place was - even with the business card (in Thai and English map/directions) - so I just used to tell them "Patpong" and them point them down Silom Road a little furhter.

It gives them an excuse to get their hands in your wallet. They want a cut, just like a BF.

I stayed at four 4-star hotels, and one 5-star hotel in BKK on my recent trip. My experiences were:

Windsor Suites (2,000 baht): I booked for one person.
On one occasion, they charged me 1,000 baht as a guest fee. It depends on who is watching the elevator. The other three times, I wasn't charged extra. If not for the guest fee, the hotel is a great bargain. Two rooms, Two TV's (with HBO), in-room safe. Close to Soi Cowboy.
The guy who charged me said they check the ID with the registered second name. I gave the guy a piece of my mind. He said it was hotel policy, and the money didn't go in his pocket. Maybe he just wanted me to slip him a 100, I'm not sure. I was really pissed and paid the 1000. Maybe I wasn't charged again because they were afraid I'd kick their ass. I'm not sure.

Meridian President (2450 baht). I booked single, brought several girls in, they never charged me for a guest fee. The girls registered their IDs.

Intercontinental (5000 baht). Booked a single, wasn't charged extra for guests. Shit, shouldn't be for that price. Nice place, but not worth double the cost of 4-star in my opinion, unless you need the speaker in the bathroom with separate volume control. Nice pool on the roof.

Arnoma (2100 baht). Booked for 2 people (per BK's suggestion), but only registered my name. They didn't charge me extra, but checked the registry when I brought girls in. Had I booked 1 person? I'm not sure. Hotel is older, older furnishings, much less room than Windsor, but good locaton for shopping (across street from WTC).

Sofitel Silom (3600 baht) Booked single. Brought several girls in, they didn't try to charge extra but I didn't register the guests at the desk, since the hotel had an in-room safe. No one said anything, but I did get a REAL NASTY look from a young french woman on the elevator with my TG in the morning.

Hope this helps.

Check out the Majestic Suites, guest friendly, clean, in room safe in the middle of all the action. Cost 1150. Not a shit hole. I'm staying there next week.. I like the sound of that next week. 3 days

Thanks for the info. BTW, the Monarch Lee Garden is now the Sofitel. I had wanted to stay at the Windsor Suites but got turned off by the manager's reply on this forum saying that they would be charging a guest fee. I guess it is hit and miss. I'll just have to ask before registering to prevent any fee surprises.

Yeah, that desccription of the Monarch certainly sounds familiar. But they've raised the rates just for the name of the hotel, or maybe I could have gotten a better booking?

If you're a smoker and decide on the Sofitel, check out the cigar bar up the stairs. They have an excellent selection of smokes. I highly recommend the Montecristo #2 (unless you're an American like me, naturally).
