Hi all I'm a newbie so please be gentle
I will be in Bkk for the second time and looking at getting an apartment instead of a hotel (on my own). As I will be having some guests I was wondering if apartments are the better option to a hotel? I have found a heap of information on guest friendly hotels in this forum but what I would like to know is do apartments normally use similar rules to hotels in relation to guests?
I hope that all makes sense
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks guys

Hi Skippy,

Whether you can find an apartment depends on how long you will be staying: usually 2 months is the shortest practical time, due to deposits, etc.  Apartments will be easier to find, the farther away from the nightlife areas you go, and will be priced accordingly.

If you rent, you possess the premises, so no worries about guests, at least regarding the landlord.  You may want to think twice before bringing someone home, though, since she will be likely to stop by when girl #2 is there...  You can't change rooms as easily...

If, by chance, you are thinking of a Serviced Apartment, then it a bit different: they are much the same as hotels, though geared for longer stays, with more in-room amenities, etc.  No deposit first/last month deposits normally required.  And I don't know of any that restrict 'guests'; most have security to screen them/hold IDs, etc.

Since you didn't mention price, I assume you want an apartment to save money.  In my experience, only a stay of 3 months or more will justify it, unless you are looking for rock-bottom accomodations.  In that case, there are a few that blur the distinction between apartments and low-rent hotels.

Hope this helps,
haam sup

Hey Haam sup,

Thanks a lot thats a great help. And I was talking about serviced apartments sorry.
To be more specific, I will be staying for 3 weeks but I had a couple of Serviced Apartments lined up in Pratanum for 6000-10000baht for a minimun of a month which is pretty good I believe. I have gone for Pratanum as I think it is still reaonably central to all things! (I think still close to sukhimvit road) Can't get these rates in Suk.

My options are -

Serviced Apartment - (Located in First House Hotel) for about 7000baht a month. (Actually a mini suite that occupys 3 ppl) plus utils

Serviced Apartment - Independent in Pratanum for about 9000 a month. - plus utils

Normal Hotel Room (Double) - First House Hotel - approx 800pn.

Your last comment you mentioned a recommened minimum stay of 3 months...you were referring to a normal apartment and not a serviced apartment I assume.

Based on the info you have provided, it looks as though it won't make much difference if I go the hotel room or serviecd apartment, we will still be subject to the 10 point security check at reception

As for your other comment about one friend rocking up while another is there...thats a whole seperate issue hahaha (will still be faced with that in a hotel)

If you had to pick an option above, which would it be? I'll go with the advice you give due to my lack of expertise in this area. Thanks again

Cheers

Skippy,

I always prefer a serviced apt., and yes, the 3 month stay referred to a regular apt.

Can't comment on your choice, since I don't know the one you are considering, but Pratunam is a great location.  You can catch a quick cab or even a bus to WTC, and catch the Skytrain to all the good spots.

If you can, let us know about the deals you have found - 7-9000 sounds pretty good for a serviced apt in that area.  I'd never consider a hotel for 800/night if the apt was decent...

The security check is a GOOD thing, how ever you look at it.  It protects you, and if you have a regular GF, you can make arrangements for her to bypass it, if it becomes a hassle.

But believe me, more than one of us has changed rooms, or even hotels, to avoid a crazy bargirl...

have fun,
haam sup

Am I allowed to post a link or 2 here haam? Or do you want me to email it?
I got a couple of URL's for these places...
I guess It wasn't so much about the security check, but if I get asked to pay extra for a guest when I have booked a double or even triple room I will be very annoyed (I'm sure you have been there)
My guests woouldn't be bar girls but girls I met at nightclubs on my very brief first visit and we have just kept in touch (but I guess that makes no diff to hotel staff eh)
Lemme know about the links champ

No problem posting links, it will be helpful to everybody.  They need to be on a separate line, like this:

BTW, this is where I usually stay.

As for extra charges, you should NEVER be charged extra for guests at a Serviced Apt.  You can always verify this before you fork it over, though; This Is Thailand.

Thanks in advance for posting your finds, and have a great time.

Skippy,

Thanks for the links.

How long are you staying?  And when are you planning on arriving?

First House is kind of tucked away from the main streets, and you will probably need to take taxis or moto-taxis to catch the Skytrain, or direct to your location.  If you're thinking about 'going local', this can be a good thing.  There are plenty of food carts in the area, which would suit me fine.

Just be aware that you won't be walking to any nightspots that I know about...maybe a few smaller MPs...and it will be raining increasingly over the next few months

Also, their website mentions first month and a deposit.  Did they waive the deposit, or does that fit your plans?

I actually looked at them as a possibility for my first long-term stay...look forward to your impressions when you return.

Also, if you rent an appartment on a monthly basis, you will be accountable for paying for electricity and water, where as in hotels, everything is inclusive.  Be careful about making this decision because we all know that air con and TV uses a lot of electricty.  Happy hunting!

Hi Guys,

You have both pointed out some things I should have thought of. Utils, getting around, nightlife,BTS etc...
I think as I don't know Bkk very well, I am better of spending the extra $$ and heading on down Sukhimvit way which should address most of these problems. Going by the previous posts that I have seen Manhattan Hotel looks the go!?
Looks to be walking distance to BTS,Nana etc..hopefully and guest friendly..also decent for the price.
Maybe when I know my around Bkk a bit better and feel more comfortable I can stay out further out in a cheaper hotel.

Thanks a million gentlmen

BTW HS, I am coming in July/August...will probably be pissing with rain but won't dampen my enthusiasm
