Can we rely on the room's safe box (at any 4 star hotels or Service Apartments) to store money, passport, etc.. when we go out or when we sleep at night in the hotel room with BG(s)? OR should we have our most valuables at the front desk safe box? Does anyone have bad experience with this? Thank you.

ilovelos: I've never had any problems leaving items in the room safe. I usually will leave my passport, 1/2 my extra cash in the safe. I leave the other 1/2 in my suitcase locked up as well as copy of my passport. I even leave my laptop on the desk in plain site, as well some loose cash and change on the desk. Never had any of the items touched or taken from anyone (females, or hotel staff.) The fact of the matter is that the hotel staff can access either your room safe or the hotel safe. So .. keeping that in mind, I'd rather just keep it in my room. I think there is less chance of a the hotel politely saying, "Oops, this is all you gave me to store in our hotel safe. ha ha ha. When you've traveled in the past, if you have kept things in the hotel safe and felt secure, then rest assure that BKK is no different. You can also read these threads that deal with the same topic. are hotel safes safe? http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=7&topic=112&start=0 Security in Hotels and Apartments http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=7&topic=290&start=0 Are safety boxes safe? http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=19&topic=123&start=0 ** I think most members have not had things stolen out of their room or from the hotel safe. The problem has been with credit card theft. So, be very carefull and aware of when and where you use your card!! ** Enjoy Thailand!!

Ilovelos, It is the same for me, I have never had any problems with the room safe. I find it more handy than having everything in the safety deposit at the reception. To lock my cupboard I am in additon always having one of these bike locks with me, this works in most hotels. When you have a TG with you, I would recommend to empty your pockets and put your valuables in a safe place. It is always better to be careful. The only thing which I have got stolen once was a music cassette that I forgot under my pillow, LOL...! When I store my valuables in the safety deposit at the reception, I always put them in a new big envelope and seal it with tape and my signature. A safe thing that inspired me while beeing in the Philippines.

After I take money out of the box, I write on the envelope in plain sight of the person how much money is left inside. Never a problem.

Bandit-You recomend putting your valuables in a safe place if a Thai girl is with you. I'm a heavy sleeper so i consider no place in the room safe. But I try to hide sopme money in the room beforehands.

Dog, LOL, I am just very cautious about everything...! One more thing which I forgot to mention. Most of the times a TG is proposing you to take the shower first. I then always take my jeans with me, so she cannot look inside my pockets. I always try to send her to the shower first which will then give me time to empty my pockets, hide the money or if a room safe is available, to put it into the safe. The same is for taking off my precious golden chain with the buddha! Or I give her an advance of two or so minutes, put these things away and then join her in the shower, as I love to shower together with TGs too much...

The safes are "reasonably" safe (anything is possible in Thailand). Never leave your money in your room in a small hotel upcountry or Issan - it will be stolen. Always wet the key pads on your safe if it is a in room safe such as at the Windsor Suites or Grand President. Hotel staff have been known to put rosin or other powder on the keys and can tell where you have touched certain keys via degradation of the powder. Number one rule use common sense - ATM's are best.

Once I've heard about a scam when a BG asked to put her valuables in the safe with your stuff. Naturally she noticed the combination of the safe, and while the person in question was sleeping, she emptied the safe and did a runner. So keeping certain valuables in the hotel safe, in a sealed envelope, would be my best bet. Also splitting your cash and other important items is always recommended.
