With low occupancy rates, I thought now would be a good opportunity to take advantage of priceline.com and bid for accomodations. In planning for my upcumming Sept trip, I've been successful with the following: JW Marriot: 6 nights @ $55 USD Shangri-La: 3 nights @ $65 USD These prices no not reflect taxes & surcharges, so the amount billed to my credit card was 15-20% higher. Also, it is my understanding that the usual complementary breakfast buffet is not included. Anyone else out there using priceline?

TA, I've stayed at the JW and the Shang on priceline stays. The Shangri-la was nice but a little disappointing in that their standard rooms have no separate shower/bath. The JW does and so do the renovated rooms at the Westin. But for USD50 (all taxes/fees included), can't really complain. Here's a tip for you, be a GoldenCircle member and get a free b/fast at the Shangri-la (even on a PL stay!). You even get stay credit. Shangri-la must be new to this whole PL thing, absolutely no PL discrimination. But the best value, IMO, was Regency Park at USD12/night. Amazing price.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Dan, If these hotels meet your needs, rates sound very resonable. If you recommend them, I'll keep these in mind for high season. However, I'm thinking now is a good time to pay a little more for some 5 star accomodations that I normally wouldn't want to splurge on. Nothing wrong with being a Cheap Charlie. More money to spend on the girls, but it's also nice to enjoy the girls in some choice cribs. Piston, What's GoldenCircle? How does one join, what's the cost, and what are the benefits?

TA, GoldenCircle is Shangri-la's affinity/loyalty program (e.g. think Hilton HHonors, Marriott Rewards etc). Join online free at http://www.shangri-la.com. Many benefits (besides chalking up stay credit) including the 2 most important: free b/fast and free local calls! Actually the program promises only a free Continental b/fast but the BKK Shangri-la gives you you the buffet. I've stayed at the Shangri-la several times and I think it is a very very nice hotel, like I said the only disappointing thing is that the standard rooms do not have a separate shower/bath. I once scored an upgrade to a deluxe room on the 23rd floor during the height of the SARS crisis - this room was amazing (separate showers/huge bathroom). Unique things about the Shangri-la are: reception personally escorts you to room after check-in, free local locals (provided you are GoldenCircle), multiple newpapers delivered to room (I got the BKK Post, AWSJ and USAToday all in one day), and excellent staff (reception knew me by name the 2nd check-in onwards) among other things. Teacher, I booked the Regency on the UK PL site using the GBP10 bonus with a final bid of GBP5/night. With taxes and fees, this came up to USD12/night.

piston, Thanks for the info, bro. I'm enrolling in GoldenCircle. If you're in town between Aug 27 and Sept 25, I owe you a few beers.

I have used Priceline extensively, not only in BKK. Some BKK deals I've got: Regency Park £5 Novotel Lotus £15 Marriott Resort £18 JW Marriott £23 Westin £25 Shangri-La £30 All without tax and not possible anymore since the £10 bonus is gone.

TA, No beers owed - I've gotten more out of this forum than I've put in. But yes, I'm planning to be in town late Sept. Another tip: once you get your GoldenCircle number, call the hotel reservations directly and provide the number to them. That way, everything's set up when you check-in. You can refer to PL as "your travel agent". Yet another tip: The Shangri-la is undergoing renovations right now. A little noisy on some lower floors. Should be over by September but do ask at check-in to be sure - you don't want to move rooms later on because of the noise. Lastly, the hotel is right beside a BTS station (Saphan Taksin) - I find it easier/faster to use the trains than hopping into a cab when heading down to the Sukh. in the evenings. Silom/Bangrak (the area around the hotel) can be pretty congested at rush hour. The station can be accessed through the Krunthep wing entrance (The Shangri-la is divided into 2 blocks: the "Regular" wing and the more premium "Krunthep" wing)

Quick question: if you're bidding on a 5-star hotel in the Sukhumvit area, how many options does Priceline offer? I really like the JW and was wondering where else I could potentially end up. Thanks for the help...
