Never been to BKK and want a nice hotel stay.
Is Sukhumvit a to long street for walking, say from Majestic hotel (soi 6) to Taipan hotel (Soi 23)?
We thinking about to start at Majestic and check out the hotels on my list, maybe better of in at Tuk-Tuk?

Your really never better off in a Tuk-Tuk. Walk, take a taxi or ride the skytrain. I would avoid Tuk-Tuk's unless there is no other choice. Tuk-Tuk's are rarely cheaper, no meter, not airconditioned and the ones slithering around the tourist areas are usually driven by guys out to rip off newbie farangs.
As far as walk-in hotel shopping goes - I see no reason why you couldn't do it. Make a reservation for your arrival and check out some of the various hotels on your list the following day or two. This will obviously be easier in low season. If your travelling in high season you will want to make sure you have a reservation for your stay incase the other choices on your list are not acceptable or have no vacancies.
Personally, I am too lazy for such things and unless I was staying for a long time (more than 2 weeks) I would probably just stick with whatever I booked providing the accomodations were decent and the hotel is guest friendly. If this is your first trip to BKK your probably gonna have a lot more fun things to do than wander around looking at hotels on your first day in the City of Angels.

I've stayed at the Majestic Suites many times and will stay again. In room safe, no hassle guest policy. Room are clean and well maintained. You are in the middle of everything less then 5 minute walk to sky train station. Cost about 1100 per night.

Walking distance depends somewhat on time of year. During the high season, the humidity is lower (not coincidently) and walking is not too bad. But during other times, it could be a little uncomfortable depending on time of day.
Sidewalks are in very bad shape in some places, so bring some good walking shoes or athletic shoes that have decent support to prevent twisting an ankle or foot.
But to get from straight from Majestic to Soi 23, taking the BTS sky train makes sense just about any time of year. It is quick, clean, safe, and has good A/C. There is a BTS stop near the Majestic and at Soi 24 (get off on the other side for Soi 23). Cost is about 20 baht for that distance (2 stops away), I believe. Not exactly sure where the other hotels are, and whether the BTS is feasible during your search.
If you try to negotiate a walk-in rate directly with the hotel, it is important to look up an Internet rate offered by a travel agent (having a print-out would not hurt), and ask the hotel if they can match or beat that rate. Most travel agent hotel rates are very similar, and you can use the one associated with the hotel section of this forum as a guide.

I would agree with Holy Diver - pick a tried-and-true, with a good internet rate for any stay of 2 weeks or less, and make it a point to check out a few others as time permits. If you are really overcome by a better value, never too late to switch, or keep it in mind for your next trip. You WILL be back...
And just a niggling little point, Mr. Alan: Soi 23 is the back side of Cowboy, 1 block east of Asoke, so Asoke Station would be the correct BTS stop. Soi 24 is the Phrom Pong Station, a fairly long walk from Soi 23, but, as you said, on the other side of the street...there is NO even/odd side correlation on Sukhumvit past Asoke...

Great tips Mr Alan, didnt know that was possible, believed that walk-in rates always a bit higher - well doesnt matter that much. The main thing is to fast get a nice staying cuz I'm only on a 2 days (!!) visit, then off to Phuket a few weeks..

If you don't care about the rates, then your list of hotels is questionable. Rack rates are much higher than travel agent rates, not just a bit higher.

Your in BKK for two days and you want to waste time walking from hotel to hotel in 90++ and humidity up the ass to save a buck? IMHO there are better way's to spend your time in BKK. Good luck!

Hey, I'm dont wanna look stupid here..
I just thought the hotel list was ok, since I havent been in BKK I wasnt shure about the quality levels of the hotels.
What I really looking for is a typical european 3 star hotel or a very good 2star - is that not on my list?
