I am going to be in BKK in mid Oct.
I have heard that you can get a better deal just walking up to a hotel vs booking online.
Is this true?
My plan was to book a hotel for 1 night only then if I didn't like it go to another and try that one. Actually I don't care about saving the money as much as I care about liking the hotel.
I would like to have a hotel already booked for my 1st night as I might not want to hassle with finding a hotel after a 7 million hour flight.
So is it a good idea to do this? How crowded is it there in Mid October? Will I be screwed if I don't book online for the whole time?
Also Can anyone reccomend a good 4 or 5 star that has 24 hour room service. HBO. Pay per view movies etc. Oh yeah and GUEST FRIENDLY!!!! Where I might not want to switch.

There are MUCH better deals booking on-line most of the time, booking agencies generally buy a "block" of rooms for a very discounted rate and pass the savings on to you.
IMO, book on-line, you will get a good deal and the only thing you will have to worry about is filling your room with LBFM's. Have fun!

I've actually found the opposite.
During my last trip I had booked only the first 4 days, the rest of the 2 months everything was walk-in price. Some hotels "Manhattan for one" quote a much higher walk-in price that I could get of the net, but others where consistantly lower (I did look up their net rates though and got them to either match it, or do better).
I did have to haggle a bit (and had fun doing that), but if I felt they wheren't giving me a reasonable rate, I'd just say "thanks, but too much" and walk out. On a couple of occations I did get called back and got a good rate, other times I just went to another hotel.
It worked for me, but your milage may vary.
it also depends where you want to be. In BKK you can stay at the Park Hotel (across from the soi 7 beergarden) for 1100B a night (inc. a guest), or Honey Hotel up on soi 17 (or was it 19).. bit more of a walk.
In Pattaya, either the Lido beach hotel right on the beach road, about 15 meters from the entrance of Walking St. for around 650B (inc. Guest), but they have smaller rooms. The Welcome hotel on Second Rd. is a short walk, but bigger rooms, pool, etc and 750B a night (I think inc. guest).

Not since April, they where refurbishing last time I was there. Like I said, they have small rooms, but very close to everything and I had a good size bed (big enough for two  )

Unfortunately I don't remember the names of the people at the hotel, I kind of had my hands full with my TGF. 
But might be back there in 6 weeks, can have a look if you want. 
..and I found the rooms big enough for what I needed.

Book the JW Marriott on Sukhumvitt. Its one block away from NEP, very girl friendly, no need to book double. Arrange a pickup from them 1,100 badt from the airport, they will wait for you with a sign "Mr Al Kiholic" and take you by Benz to the hotel. I seen bros get very good rates online. The JW is a 5-star hotel. 24-hour room service, HBO etc..
In regards to walk-ins, I live here and I wanted to get a room one-night. Walking overnight into 5 hotels, I finally found a room, all previous four were booked. Better things to do then walking the streets of BKK suitcase in hand. OPEC is also happening in BKK in Oct., so plan accordingly

INHO these places are disgusting many better places for the same price (I don't want to get into a spat with you TT but I took some advice from the board and stayed in these places and THEY SUCK) PEACE

whilst some large, "name" hotels may give good on-line rates, without doubt you get better deals walk in at any of the smaller places ... especially if you negotiate a little, say you may stay a week, ask for 'agent ' rate, say last time you were here [ even if you have never been before] you only paid "x" - all part of the game - plus also agree that you only want a night in any place if you are not sure of the area - and then confirm the extra days after you have your bearings -
