I recently went to the horizons karaoke with a friend and her girlfriend - the guy asked for IDs as NEW hotel policy. I never gave anything as we only went to karaoke but WHAT's UP??

Was this to check for underage drinking? Everyone in town has been put on alert for the upcoming APEC conference to clean up their act and make sure all laws are enforced, especially for underage drinking and underage prostitution (which was a bigger problem at one time).
There are lots of reporters coming to APEC and many of them will do stories on Thailand, which is lot more interesting and easier to understand than stories on global economics. Any articles they do on the sex scene in Thailand will be a big plus for them, since sex sells well in the West.

As long as the hotel is known to be girl friendly, I doubt there will be any trouble. But remember that some "girl friendly" hotels ask for the id of the girl, for the safety of the guests.

i like the id thing always, apec or not. If things are the way they are already, what will happen DURING apec ? Are they going to put all the girls in a giant closet or something until apec is over ???

He never wanted anything as I said we'll be going to the Horizons karaoke only so I doubt it was about drinking.
Too bad I was pretty drunk after a night in Soi Cowboy, would have definitely found out more about the new policy as I like to stay in this hotel.

I suspect it was just an id check, and not an attempt to charge extra for the guest. Id checks will probably increase as APEC approaches.
