Hi guys, I'll be finally going to LOS from January 20th till the 30th. I booked a room at Nana Hotel till the 25th and was thinking of going to Pattaya for the remainder of the vacation (maybe I'll go back to BKK the last day). I was wondering if it's safe to assume that walkin's are ok in Pattaya hotels since it's cheaper that way (although it's peak season). I don't want to spend too much money (around 500-800 baht), and also I'm not sure yet if that's the day I'll be going to Pattaya (if I find a nice TG or have too much fun in BKK, I might just stay in BKK more days, etc). Please advise...oh BTW, this is a great site. Thanks guys.

Get to Pattaya early in the day. Walkin is fine. I use this guy to drive me to Pattaya for 1500 including tolls. He speaks excellent english and knows his way around Pattaya. His name is Alex, email: tbsinfo@ksc.th.com
There are cheaper ways to get to Pattaya but with luggage and not knowing your way around Alex is the way to go. Tell him Denny said hello. Check out http://www.freelancerbar.com for accurate up to date info on Pattaya.

Noticed that some of the Pattaya hotels are putting surcharges on rooms for the 22nd to the 29th of January for Chinese New Year. No doubt that will effect availability. I was planning to book in advance although you can always find a room somewhere in Pattaya.

Just hail down a regular taxi on the road and negotiate a max of 1000bht inclusive of tolls direct to Pattaya. You may be able to find someone going on thesame date to share the cab fare from this site or the one BigD recommended. Also, many good hotels but o recommend eastiny place (not Inn) soi8. Have fun and who knows, I may be joining you guys (still undecided between Jan and Feb)
Minder, is Chinese new year event worth making the trip Jan and not Feb?

Bestmate - I have not been to Pattaya during Chinese New Year previously. For 2004 it falls on the 22nd 23rd and 24th of January.
Hopefully one of the bros can tell us what to expect in Pattaya during Chinese New Year........

First time the guys in LOS and you want him to take a taxi where most likley the driver doesn't speak english and or doesn't know Pattaya and the guy gets dropped off god knows where in Pattaya. With luggage and knows zip.

If your goona go use Alex. The next time you go back to Pattaya and you will be back there are other cheaper ways to get there.

I was just stating my opinion. My first time in LOS this year I got as much info as I could from this forum and did exactly what I sugested to dragonball. I hailed a taxi and negoitiated 1000bht to Pattaya. Also, one can try different taxi's until you find one that speaks english. Its really not very difficult. If dragonball wants to go with Alex then thats his choice.
I will be in Pattaya around late Jan/early Feb so maybe meetup for a drink or two....

I did a walk in too, the cheaper but close to the action hotels are mostly fully booked, but you’ll be surprise that how quickly people ran out of money and had to cut the vacation short.
But I have a very bad experience with Alex.
I booked days in advance for the trip to Pattaya, I even re-confirm with him a night before.
On the day of pickup, I waited on the outside like a fool for two hours, and Alex had power off his phone. It is extremely embarrassing waiting for him out side, sweating, and the worst part is that my hotel had offered me to drive me down to Pattaya for 1200baht (with insurance). I eventually had to accept the offer.
My friend also had some problem with him, he had book Alex for pick-up at the airport, and Alex also did a no show, and the replacement driver had try to jack up the price mid way to Pattaya.
I’m not bad mouthing about the guy, but it seems to me that he had no back-up plan, and I don’t know the deal with not turning-on the phone.
Just print out the address and direction before you go, or you can write down the hotels phone number and had them tell the driver how to get there.

I realize we all offer our opinion and I hope I didn't seem harsh in my response. He's going as a walk in with no hotel in mind and that can be tough if the cab leaves you off in a out of the place.

If I was left standing outside for 2 hours I'd be bad mouthing Alex. I will be using his service next week (I like the sound of next week) and I will mention the hassle he had with you and your buddy.
Sorry he didn't live up to my reccomendation.
FWIW, I get no kickback from Alex except for the 2 beers he bought me one time for throwing business his way.
