Stayed at the Westin on my last trip in BKK, and had to share what I thought was a sensational deal:
For Starwood Preferred Guest members, they offer a cash and points deal at the Westin for $25 US a night plus 1,200 points. They classify the Westin as a Category 1, which is their lowest class. 1,200 points is a very low amount and easily obtained for anyone who travels even just a little bit, particularly if you have a Starwood American Express card. Builds up points fast.
Usually, when you redeem points for rooms at the Westin, they put you in one of the unrenovated rooms (which are still quite nice). To make sure I got a Starwood Preferred room, a 500 bht tip to the clerk at check-in was all it took. No problem at all. The renovated rooms at the Westin are terrific, very nice and roomy, great bathrooms and of course the Heavenly bed.
I usually stay at the Sheraton; stayed at the Westin for five days this time. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay; totally girl friendly, great staff, good lobby bar, and terrific location close to Soi Cowboy, my favorite hangout. For $25 a night and minimal points, was a total steal.
The SPG program is a great frequent guest program; easily the best of all hotels. Encourage you to sign up if you haven't already...

For a 500 Baht tip I hope you got more than a room upgrade!!!
