Dear brothers, I am planning my first ever trip to Bangkok. I need to sort out the hotel accomodation first, as I will be in Bangkok during the peak season in December. I've read through all the recommendations in the Hotel Issues forum. My budget is approx 1200-1400 baht. I've narrowed down to : 1. Grand President - Topaz Studio 2. Manhattan 3. Somerset 4. Ambassador - Tower Wing 5. Majestic Suites I have found that GP is fully booked for the dates I am interested in. I have got a booking confirmation for Manhattan through Siam net. My main requirement (apart from the hotel being girl-friendly) is that there should be an in-room safe - big enough to hold my laptop, digital camera and other stuff like passport, wallet etc. I know a lot of you brothers have recommended Manhattan for their no-nonsense guest policy. How long is the commute from Manhattan to all the 'action' places ? Can I walk to NEP, Beer Garden Soi 7 etc. or do I need to take a taxi ? Is it safe at night ? Would really appreciate if you can advise me if I have made the right choice. I will be travelling alone and will be more than glad to hook up with some brothers who would be travelling in the few days before Christmas (my target dates are between 15-22 Dec). Cheers, NewKid

I like the Majestic Suites because it has in room safe, no hassle guest policy. They will check id if you ask. Just have the girl walk up to the counter. They know the drill. As far as location your in the middle of everthing. I have walked all around this area at 3-4AM and never felt unsafe. Then again I'm walking around sober. Whatever hotel you choose, make your reservation, NOW and reconfirm 2-3 days before you leave.

I just came back (two days ago) from a two week stay at the Manhattan and I stayed at the MS on my previous 10 day trip (November - December/2002). When I stayed at the MS it was 1500 baht per night (book directly with MS through its website) and at the Manhattan it only cost me 880 baht (US$22.00) per night booked via Siam.net. Both hotels have in-room safes large enough for a laptop. The in-room safe at the MS uses a card key (one more thing to carry) and the one at the Manhattan uses an electronic combination lock. The room at the Manhattan is about 50% larger than the room at the MS; however, the furnishing is a lot better at the MS. The furnishing at the Manhattan is borderline average. The bathtub at the Manhattan is the standard longtub with a fixed showerhead, which is hard to move around with two or more people. The bathtub at the MS is octagon in shape, which is a lot easier to move around with more than one person in it and the showerhead is attached to a hose. Both are girl friendly. MS checks IDs, but Manhattan does not. Manhattan only check your room number to make sure that you have booked a double. Extra towels are sometimes hard to come by at the Manhattan. I think they barely have enough for all the rooms when the hotel is fully booked. No problems with extra towels at the MS. At the MS, you can borrow their iron from housekeeping. At the Manhattan, you are not allowed to use an iron in your room. I think they want you to use their ironing service. The AC at MS was a lot colder than the Manhattan. The breakfast buffet at the Manhattan was definitely superior than the breakfast at the MS. The MS is very close to NEP, but not that walkable to Soi Cowboy. The Manhattan is on Soi 15 and in between the Nana BTS station and the Asok BTS station, but walkable to both NEP and Soi Cowboy. Never felt unsafe walking around at night. The only problem I ever had at night on the street was from a really drunk farang. Try not to take tuk tuks, the driver will try to take you to places where he gets a commission or coupon for gasoline.

As stated in my post in the hotel section, I highly recommend the Manhattan. It is very convenient to all locations and is in the middle of the Nana and Asoke stations. Service is good, the rooms are clean and the hotels feels very comfortable with no dirty looking guests.

mm3 & GOKU, At the Manhattan, were the other restaurants for lunch and dinner any good? The Korean BBQ restaurant looks especially appealing on their website. Also, did you get the chance to visit their pool/spa/massage? If so, how was that?

The food at the Manhattan coffee shop/restaurant is acceptable, not bad but not great either. It opens 24 hours so it's handy for a late night/early morning snack if you don't want to go outside to Sukhumvit. The breakfast buffet has a large variety (both western and eastern) but the food is somewhat bland. I ate at the Japanese restaurant once and it was acceptable. I did not try the Korean restaurant. Unfortunately, the Korean restaurant might be closed because the restaurant's signs were all covered up when I left on the morning of September 14. Did not try the pool but it looked small. Tried the in-house massage on the 2nd floor twice. Once oily and once TT. The TT was pretty good but the girl who did the oily bruised my arm and she was not very good. Prices were comparable to outside massage places. They give you a robe to change into and a locker to put your belongings. The locker/changing area is in the hallway of the massage area, it has no curtains or door so anyone who walks by can see you stripping. The only ones who walk by are the girls and other customers. Did not try the sauna. There's a 24 hours restaurant on the other side of Sukhumvit at the basement of Times Square. It's pretty good and serves Thai food and some Issan food like fried pig's neck which is quite tasty.

Dear brothers, Thanks for all the replies. I get the picture now. I am tempted to go with MS. Right in the middle of the action. The only problem looks like is the size of the room. Are there bigger sized rooms in MS ? Thanks for all your help. Cheers, NewKid

I am not sure if there are bigger size rooms in MS. You may need to ask MS via email. They respond fairly fast. The larger size room at the Manhattan really did not make that big a difference to me because most of the time when I was in the room I was either on the king size bed or in the bathroom. Well, unless you are one of those who likes to have more than two cuties with you at a time, then the room size would become a bigger issue. If you have decided to stay at the MS, you should ask them to place you in a room on the back side of the building. My room was on the top corner of the back of the building and I could see NEP and the comings and goings of some of the people from the window.

One more thing. At the MS, there were two security guards (one day and one night) and they were usually by the door next to the front desk (very small lobby). I tipped each 100 baht at the beginning of my stay and another 100 baht in the middle to ensure that there would be no hassle from them. One time I brought a girl back with no ID and the night guard let her pass; however, I had to sign a piece of paper saying that she had no ID. She was 23 and looked like it.
